banner and buttons are images you make to advertise your site. and if you want people to put your banners and buttons on their sites, it's good if you use the standard sizes that others use and make your banner/button nice looking.
no one wants a billboard on their site, especially if its not a link to their own. so don't make banners that are ridiculously big. Really buttons are the way to go.
The sizes for buttons go:
50x50 pixels
100x50 pixels (plaques)
100x35 pixels and
88x31

banners shouldn't really be bigger than:
200x100
200x50 and
200x35

but sometimes I make banners of different sizes for different purposes. theres no law in making anything for your site, but these images are usually used the most. do what you want.

as for whats on your buttons, just make them attractive and simple. sometimes its nice to put a box around your image as a border to make it look neater.

transparent buttons are popular now, because they match everyone's layout. plus they look cool most of the time.

to link someone's banner or button you do this:
