Brief history of the Singapore Rattan Industry Association In 1909, the Singapore Rattan Industry Association was formed by the entrepreneurs and workers in the rattan trade. It was first named as the Kwong Pong (Cantonese) Rattan Association and was later change to the present Singapore Rattan Industry Association. The constitution of 17 rules and regulation were approved by the Registrar of Societies on the 9th Nov 1909. The Association begin it daily activities to cater for the needs of their members. During the period of the Japanese Occupation, the Association carried on its operation with extreme difficulties. It was however fortunate that many members supported the daily operation and safeguard the properties of the Association. In 1951, the annually appointed Presidency System were change to the present 2 year Executive Committee and its 1st batch of Executive Committee were elected. With 46 new rules and regulation were implemented in 1952. Three amendment to the constitution had taken place to date to cope with the prevailing situation. In 1986, the Association bought a new premises in Geylang Lorong 24A with the help of their members. Its was officiated during its 73rd Anniversary on the 20th Sept 1986. In 1999, it has moved to Kreta Ayer Street. Activities and Sub-Committee
The Mutual Aid Committee was set up for the benefit of deceased members. A token sum were collected from each member and donated to the deceased immediate family so as to assist on the funeral expenses.
The Recreational Committee was set up to organize recreational activities for their members and families. Gathering, Tours etc.. were organise for their activities.
The Educational Award Committee was set up to award their members children for their academic achievement. The award are given out to Primary, Secondary and Pre-U students at the end of each year.
The Entrepreneur Committee was set up by the Entrepreneur to facilitate and exchange trade reference.
