The LOVE group's campaign with the Greater Lawrence Mental Health Center (GLMHC) began in 1993. On Dec. 13, 1993, after several meetings and during a press conference held on the date mentioned above (Dec. 13, 1993)The GLMHC signed onto LOVE's mental health consumer/doctor guidelines (they're on page 4-if you'd like to see them...)
These guidelines are on page4 and include the doctors' at the GLMHC explaining the medication(s), the benefit(s) of the drug(s), the side effect(s) of the medication(s), and the likely result(s) of refusing to take the prescribed medication(s)-In short-INFORMED CONSENT!
Within the last year, it has come to the LOVE group's attention that some of the doctors at the Greater Lawrence Mental Health Center (GLMHC) were not following the informed consent process agreed to in the guidelines. As a result of our findings...I've been working on the LOVE group campaign with the Greater Lawrence Mental Health Center (GLMHC) to have the informed consent process, once again, initiated into practice by the doctor's there-especially Dr. CLIMO, and Dr. McLaughlin.
We've met with Joe Campione, the director of the GLMHC, and he has agreed to implement the informed consent process. Joe C. has since met with the doctor's about this, however Dr. CLIMO still seems unwilling to do this. So we're planning to meet with Joe C., Dr. CLIMO, and Dr. McLaughlin, and Margaret Burke (who is the head nurse of the med clinic at GLMHC-she was at our meeting with Joe C. (which was last fall-shortly after we became aware of the informed consent not being followed as agreed upon in 1993.)).
Dr. Climo, and Dr. McLaughlin seem to be trying to develop a NEW informed consent form, I don't understand what the reasoning behind this is-but it's one of the things we'll discuss when the LOVE group meets with the GLMHC (which will hopefully be sometime in Nov. 1997).
NOTICE-Margaret Burke (the Head Nurse at the Med. clinic at GLMHC) has left the GLMHC, so the meeting that the LOVE group will have with the GLMHC will include...
Joe C.-the director of the GLMHC...Dr. Climo, Dr. McLaughlin, and the supervisor of the med. clinic of the GLMHC, and the LOVE group members who have decided to attend the meeting. The LOVE group hopes to have some possible dates for the above mentioned meeting by Oct. 29, 1997 which is when the strategy committee is meeting next.
At the Oct. 29th strategy committee meeting we hope to plan the agenda (what will be discussed) for the meeting with the GLMHC-which will hopefully be sometime in Nov. 1997.

Joe Campione left the GLMHC when the GLMHC merged with HOLY FAMILY HOSPITAL and the interim director of the GLMHC is now Jeff Fox, who is the head person in charge of the inpatient mental health units at the HOLY FAMILY HOSPITAL in Methuen, MA USA.
the LOVE group has continued to have meetings with the GLMHC about the informed consent issues and the meetings have gone well, we hope to have the matter resolved within a month or so.
