Transvestism is a great British tradition. From the cross-gender antics of Viola and Rosamund in Shakespeare's plays, to the panto tradition in which the leading boy is always a girl and the female comic always a man, to David Bowie's "men's dresses," to The Rocky Horror Show," the Brits have always known how to mix it up a little.
'Allo 'Allo is firmly in this tradition. The girls are always popping on a moustache, while the boys are slipping into high heels.
As I am compiling my programme guide, I am also compiling a hypertext index of cross-dressing in 'Allo 'Allo, and a score card for each character. For now, I will reveal is (so far) firmly in the lead in the cross-dressing stakes, having an uncanny knack of turning up in a skirt whenever Lt. Gruber is near. Hot on his tail (as always:-P ) is Gruber himself, despite avowing that he never wears red lipstick (even on special occaisions), and Herr Flick's penchant for red satin teddies and Helga's uniform is upping his score.
Stay tuned for further developments...
