The longest running TV soap ever is still as strong and as amazingly
addictive as it was back in the 60's. The soap, which goes out four
times a week (and was the first British soap to do so..), is based in
a fictional suburb of Manchester called Weatherfield. The soap is largely
based in Coronation Street - a cobbled backstreet complete with
grocers, newsagent, pub and underwear factory (Ok, so that last one
isn't so common!). The set was actually based on real-life streets like
Coronation Street near Manchester.. Each day in the life of a Coronation Street resident is filled with enough drama and turmoil to fill any normal resident's lifetime! But as with EastEnders the soap remains very much character-led and will only address bigger issues if it feels the need to move a character onwards (like the recent Steve McDonald storyline). However in recent times the soap has shied away from smaller issues and bounded into a cast axing spree cutting many of the cast in a small space of time. But as the producer explained, the cuts were only to move the lagging soap ahead. One merit factor of the soap is that a large number of the cast are long running characters who have lived there for long periods of time (Emily, Percy, Vera, Rita etc), reflecting the fact that long term residents of streets such like Coronation Street do exist.. However the soap would not exist without one major factor - common-as-muck, down-to-earth, brassy dominant women. Look at Elsie Tanner, Bet Lynch, Vera Duckworth, Hilda Ogden and now the latest contenders, Natalie Horrocks and Janice Battersby and to a lesser extent Judy Mallett. Take a walk down Corrie's cobbles and you may not return unscathed.... Statistics Coronation Street is broadcast four times a week in the United Kingdom. The first episode was shown on 9th December 1960, and has been shown continuously since then, going from two, to three (October 1989), and in December 1996, four episodes a week.
