Emmerdale
A soap set in a Yorkshire village? With a farm? And tea rooms? Switch over..... STOP!!!!! Sex, power, sex, careers, sex, murder, sex, crime, sex, high class society and, yes, more sex is Emmerdale's line of work!
The soap may not have started as anything more than a farm-based serial (with a farm name to match) but over the past 4 years its development into a shock soap has been the most imaginative and exciting soap transformation ever....
The soap is 25 years old in 97 and its audience of all ages has been spurned from its revamp as well as retained the mature audience who still enjoy the country settings and of course....the shocking drama! Its main source and momentum comes from the fact that villages like Emmerdale (formally Beckingdale) do spread rumours quicker than the annual cow-muck spread! The character base is so wide spread, from the trendy business commuters (Steve), the village elders (Betty, Seth), the high class manor-born set (Kim, Chris) and the local yokals (Dingles, Jack) etc.
So the variety of characters adds the flare when the paths cross (who can forget stable-boy Dave's steamy spicy affair with rich-bitch money driven Kim Tate) and intertwine. Emmerdale holds the most realistic of gay storylines on soap (Zoe Tate) and the most dramatic cast clearout in history (who else has a plane crash through the pub into a field killing half the village and destroying the local buildings..?).
It has the undeniably sexy stars and the unsurprisingly ordinary locals, it has characters coming back to life, it has characters killing others for love, it has schoolgirls having babies, it has a wife bought by another character from the Philippines and most of all it has the addicted audience of millions. We simply can't get enough and now with its three times a week slot we are on cloud nine...!
