Birth! A new born baby girl has just come out to the world.
Carlos Pacheco-Uergo pays the doctor to forget he ever saw the birth, the mother or the child.
Next, we see Renata talking to Rosalia Pacheco-Uergo. Out of this conversation we understand that Renata was married to Rosalia's son, Mario. Rosalia pays Renata 22 black pearls ("Perlas Negras") to leave her son and get rid of the baby. We understand that Renata had some kind of an affair, but we're not really sure. We know, from Renata, that Rosalia is a very hard, dominant woman, who controls her son's life. Renata is about to remarry.
Renata takes the baby to Miss Helen's boarding school for girls. She pays Helen 21 black pearls. One pearl for each year the child lives and studies in that school until she is 21.
The 22nd pearl is for the child, who was naturally called, Perla.
The years went by, Mario has remarried, and had a daughter, Eva. Mario and his wife got killed in a car crash, and Eva was the only survivor of that crash. Rosalia hate her, for outliving her father and put her in Helen's boarding school for girls, until she's old enough to live by herself.
Eva and Perla become good friends. The next time we see them is 21 years later, when Perla is about to leave the school. We can see that they have become good friends, and they plan to remain friends and may be work together in the cosmetic company of Eva's grandfather, Carlos called Nerta.
The family of Pacheco-Uergo consists of Carlos and Rosalia, who are married, not happily, Blanca, Carlos' sister, her son, Lauriano, and his two children, Elias and Malvina.
Renata is now married to Fernando Alvarez-Toledo. The family of Alvarez-Toledo is a big rival of the Pacheco-Uergos. They own a rival cosmetic company called Aquarel. Fernando has two sons from his first wife, Junior (Who is actually called Fernando, after his father) and Tomas. Fernando and Renata does not hold a healthy relationship, since Fernando runs many affairs. Junior is aware of the problem. He and Renata also get involved in a romantic relationship. Fernando has decided to make Tomas the main manager of Aquarel. Tomas, after accepting the job, goes on a vacation to "Refill his batteries" with his good friend Dante. On their vacation, Tomas meets Perla, and tries to attract her, but she ignores him roughly. The next day, he meets Eva (Eve), and presents himself as Adam. Eva does fall for his tricks and he manages to get her to bed, not before she introduces him to her grandfather, who came to visit.
A few weeks later, Eva finds out she is pregnant with Tomas' child. Perla helps Eva to convince Helen to let Eva stay in the school even though she's pregnant, and Perla swears to take care of the child as if he were her own. Eva has the child and she calls him Charlie (Carlos), after her grandfather, who's helped her and supported her during her entir life.
A few months after, Malvina presents Tomas as her boyfriend to her family. Carlos recognizes him as "Adam". His heart can't take it and he dies of the shock.
Since Eva is the main heiress, she takes Perla and the go to Buenos Aires. On the way ther, the car crashes, Eva dies in the explosion and Perla is the only survivor.
Since she has had Evas purse in her hands, but no documents with photos inside, the nurses at the hospital take her for Eva. The only thing Perla owns is the black pearl she always keeps with her.
Since no one in the family of Pacheco-Uergo has seen Eva since she was 7-8 years old except for Carlos, who died, no one really knows she's not Eva.
When Malvina comes to visit with Tomas, Perla recognizes him, and decides to take Eva's identity and pay Tomas back for what he has done to Eva... Even though Perla doesn't know it yet, she is also getting closer to her real mother . . .
