     The chilling wind blew over the icy terrain. The color white surrounded
the expedition. All they could see was ice for miles around. The only thing
different was the city of igloos that the expedition had built.
     "Jonny? Jonny? Jonny!!!!!" Jessie Bannon yelled.
     "Yeah?" Jonny said, "Oh, sorry. I'll have that reading in a minute."
     The team's leader, Jonny Quest, had come out for a second to take a
reading on the wind chill and speed. But, his mind had drifted off as he was
staring at the frozen beauty of the Antarctic tundra.
     The expedition team was in Antarctica to study weather, the icecap, and
other things. The team consisted mainly of Jonny Quest, head of the Quest
Corporation, one of the most prestigious scientific corporations in the world,
Jessie Bannon, professor at Yale University and one of the leading
stockholders in the Quest Corporation and close, personal friend of Jonny,
Hadji Singh, ceremonial sultan of Bangalore and close friend of Jonny and
Jessie, Dr. Emilio Vargas, former professor at MIT and currently
representative for Mexico, Contessa Vanessa Marinez, scientist from Austria,
and Angelica Huston, scientist from Arizona who has had many works published.
Also, assorted workers were in the camp.
     Jonny took the readings he needed to, and headed back into the igloo.
There, he opened a metal door on the ground and went down the stairs to the
main facility. There, he found Jessie and Hadji doing some experiments.
     "Hadji, I need a level 2 diagnostic on that ice sheet." Jessie said,
"Jonny, do you have those readings?"
     "I'm on it." Hadji said.
     "Yeah, here you go." Jonny said, handing her the results.
     Jonny walked around, looking at the computers and said, "What are you
doing?"
     "We might have found something." Jessie said, "Look."
     Jessie moved to a computer with a computer generated model of the ice
sheet that covered Antarctica. She moved the cursor to make a section of the
ice sheet come out so that you could see the different levels.
     "Look here." Jessie said, "1,000 feet down. We think we might have found
a solid object. We're digging to get to it, and we're almost there."
     "Sounds interesting. Let me know what you find." Jonny said, walking to
the stairs.
     Jonny walked up the stairs, back into the igloo, closed the door, left
the igloo, and walked to another igloo that served as their private quarters.
He opened another door that led to another underground tunnel where they
lived. On his way to his room, he met Angelica in the hall.
     "Hey Jonny!" Angelica said, stopping to talk to him, "What have you been
up to?"
     "Not much. You?" Jonny said.
     "Still studying the ozone layer hole." Angelica said, "But, I'm free
tonight. You? I was thinking we could go to the peninsula and look at the
stars come out."
     "It's supposed to be really cold tonight. Maybe we could go to the lab
and look through the telescope." Jonny said.
     "Sure! Sounds great! Look, I have to run. See you then! 6?" Angelica
said.
     "How about 6:30?" Jonny said.
     "Sounds good to me!" Angelica said, "Ciao!"
     "Bye!" Jonny said, as he continued to his room.
     Jonny thought that Angelica was nice, but he wasn't sure if he wanted to
pursue a romantic relationship with her, which is what he thought she wanted.
He thought that he'd go with her and see what happened.
     He continued down the hall until he reached his room. He unlocked the
door, and stepped inside, closing the door behind him. The room was a fairly
large room. It had a couch, T.V. with VCR, table, laptop sitting on the table,
stove, fridge, bed, and other stuff. Art pieces were everywhere, since Jonny
loved art. His favorite was Old St. Lazare Station, Paris by Claude Monet. He
loved the painting because it seemed like the perfect place to meet the love
of your life and tell her you loved her. He loved the uncertainty, the
mystery, everything about it.
     Jonny went to the laptop and checked his E-mail. But, it was just the
usual stuff, replies on the team's reports, E-mails from family, E-mails from
students interested in their work, and SPAM mail. Finally, when Jonny finished
going through it, he went to his bed and lay down. He looked up at the
ceiling, thinking about the future.
     ::Is this really where I want to be?:: thought Jonny ::I mean, I love the
work, but....I miss her.::
     The person that Jonny missed was what he thought was the love of his
life, the love he lost.
~~~~~~Flashback to a month ago~~~~~~~
     Jonny Quest walked out of the boardroom of the Quest Corporation with the
other stockholders.
     "Jonny, ready for lunch?" a girl said, walking up to him.
     "Uh, yeah." Jonny said, "Hold on just a minute."
     Jonny walked over to Jessie, handed her a folder, and said, "Have these
out by tomorrow, please. Thanks!"
     He walked back over to the girl and said, "Tiffany, we need to talk."
     Later on, Tiffany, Jonny's fiancé, and Jonny were sitting in a small cafe
sipping on their coffee after finishing lunch.
     "So, what do you need to tell me?" Tiffany said.
     "Well, we've decided that we're going to send an expedition to Antarctica
and.....I'm going." Jonny said.
     "What?!?!?!?!?!?" Tiffany said, spitting out her coffee.
     "Look, I'm sorry. But, they thought...." Jonny said.
     "No, Jonny! I love you, but I can't wait anymore! Every time you go on
one of these ‘expeditions', I'm stuck here, worried sick about whether you're
going to come back or not. Either I go or...." Tiffany said, taking off her
engagement ring and sitting it in front of Jonny, "Or else, we're through."
     "Tiffany, I..." Jonny said.
     Tiffany got up, leaned over towards Jonny, kissed him, and whispered in
his ear, "I love you."
~~~~~Present~~~~~~
     Jonny held the engagement ring up to the flourescent light. He looked at
the beauty of the illuminated surface, and said, "I love you too."
     Later on....
     "Jess, I'm about to shut down." Hadji said.
     "Ok. I'm going to work for a little bit longer. When do you think we'll
get to the object?" Jessie said.
     "Probably tomorrow." Hadji said, "Don't worry! It hasn't moved for
centuries! One day isn't going to make a difference!"
     "I guess you're right." Jessie said.
     "Of course I am! ‘Night!" Hadji said.
     "Good night!" Jessie said as Hadji moved up the stairs.
     The room grew silent except for Jessie's typing. Jessie was so absorbed
in her work that she didn't notice the shadow moving on the wall.
     Later on....
     Jonny and Angelica walked down the stairs to the lab. When they got to
the bottom, they found Jessie working at a computer.
     "Hey Jessie!" Jonny said.
     Jessie jumped slightly and said, "Boy, you scared me!! What are you guys
doing out at this time?"
     "We're going to look at the stars through the telescope." Angelica said.
     "Have either of you seen Emilio?" Jonny said.
     "No, but I think he was supposed to be out until late studying the
penguins." Jessie said, "I was just about to leave, so you guys can have the
place to yourselves."
     Jessie picked up an ice chunk she was examining, and went to the cooler
to put it back. When she opened the door, what she saw made her drop the ice.
     "Jessie, is there something wrong?" Jonny said, turning his head towards
her.
     Jessie could only point towards something in the cooler. Jonny moved over
to see...

     Ooh! The suspense!!!! Don't worry! You'll find out what happened in the
next part! Hope you like it! Please send all comments, criticisms, nice

Jessie could only point towards something in the cooler. Jonny moved over to
see...Emilio tied up in the cooler.
     "What on....Angelica! Help me get him out of here!" Jonny said, running
over to Emilio.
     Angelica came over, and helped Jonny drag Emilio out of the cooler.
Angelica got a knife to cut the rope while Jonny comforted Jessie.
     "Jess, it's ok." Jonny said, hugging her, "He's alive. It's ok."
     Later on...
     "Emilio, who was it that attacked you?" Jonny said.
     Emilio was lying in his bed, trying to recover from his traumatic
experience. The entire team was gathered in there, trying to figure out what
to do.
     "I....I do not know. One minute, I was studying the penguins. Someone
came up behind me, and.....everything went black until I woke up here." Emilio
said.
     "Guys, this is serious. This either means someone on the team has an
ulterior motive, or...." Jessie said.
     "Or we're not alone out here." Jonny said.
     Suddenly, everyone started to feel very alone at the bottom of the world.
     Later on...
     "I think we should abandon the project and go home!" Jessie said,
ecstatically, " For goodness sakes, Jonny, Emilio was almost killed!!!! Who
knows who could be next!!!!!!"
     "Jess, calm down." Jonny said, grabbing her shoulders and nudging her to
sit down, "It's going to be ok."
     "No, it's not, Jonny! We have to get out of here!" Jessie said.
     "Jess, we can't abandon this project so easily. We have a....." Jonny
said.
     "What? Responsibility? Yeah, we have a responsibility, getting this team
out alive!" Jessie said, getting up.
     "How do you know it wasn't an accident?" Jonny said.
     "Oh, well, maybe you're right Jonny!" Jessie said, sarcastically,
"Someone just happened to come along with a blunt object in their hands,
accidently hit Emilio over the head, knocking him out, and, by accident, tied
him up and stuck him in the freezer to freeze to death. Come on, Jonny!"
     "I agree, there's a danger staying here, but, if we leave, the would-be
killer would escape, and we'd never find out who it is." Jonny said, "We have
a mystery to solve, and everything we need to solve it are here. The would-be
killer is here, the weapon is here, and, more importantly, the reason they
want to sabotage our expedition is here. We're not leaving."
     "Fine, Jonny." Jessie said, moving to the door, "But, if another person
comes up, and we didn't find them in time, don't say I didn't tell you so."
     Jessie furiously left Jonny's room. Jonny sat down on his bed, and
scratched his head, thinking. ::What if she's right? What if we should leave.
What if....no, no what if's. I have to solve this. If we let him or her go,
he/she may kill again. I can't let that happen.:: thought Jonny. Jonny lay
down on his bed, and went into a troubled sleep.
     Meanwhile, in the lab....
     Jessie walked down the stairs and into the lab, where the rest of the
team, minus Emilio and Jonny, were.
     "So, what did he say?" Contessa said.
     "No. We're staying." Jessie said.
     "Is he nuts?" Hadji said, "We can't stay!"
     "The wannabe killer is here, and we have to find them before they strike
again. I want everyone in groups of two or three, if necessary. We can't be
alone, even for a minute. I want people to follow each other everywhere, to
the lab, to bed, to the bathroom even!" Jessie said.
     "Jess, no offense, but are you senile or something?!?!?!?!?" Angelica
said, "I don't want anyone to follow me to the bathroom!"
     "I'm sorry, but this is serious, and desperate times call for desperate
measures." Jessie said.
     Everyone grumbled as they decided who would be buddies with who.

     I'm trying to get the next part out soon. Probably by tonight or
tomorrow. Please send all comments, criticisms, etc. to BJLANDRY@aol.com.

The next day....
     Jessie Bannon woke up with a light in her eyes.
     "Morning!" Contessa said, moving around and cleaning up.
     "How on Earth could you sleep with that light on? I fell asleep at 12:00
because of that light." Jessie said, getting out of bed.
     "Oh, I'm sorry! If you want, I can sleep in your living room, or whatever
you want to call it. I have no problem sleeping on the couch!" Contessa said.
     "Could you? Because, with all this stuff going on, I need as much sleep
as I can get." Jessie said, "Seesh, Angelica's still sleeping?"
     Contessa looked at the slumbering Angelica, and said, "Yep. I can't sleep
this late."
     "How late is it?" Jessie said.
     "8:00." Contessa said.
     "Shoot!" Jessie said, scrambling around to get her clothes on, "I was
supposed to meet Hadji 15 minutes ago!"
     Just then, they heard a knock at the door. Contessa went to answer it,
and Hadji walked in the room.
     "Sorry I'm late but....oh shoot!" Hadji said, covering his eyes after
seeing Jessie wasn't dressed (She was still in her nightgown for you people
who would think differently), "Did I come at a bad time?"
     "Hadji, I'm still in my nightgown!" Jessie said, "It's ok. Let me go
change and I'll be right there."
     Jessie went in the bathroom to change, and Contessa said, "Where's Jonny?
I thought you two were buddies along with Emilio at night."
     "He just left. He and Emilio watched to make sure I went in here. Boy, he
is really strict about this buddy thing!" Hadji said, "It's like he doesn't
even trust me! And we grew up together!"
     "Well, this whole thing has made everyone a little edgy." Contessa said,
"I'm afraid to even go to the bathroom, fearing that someone's hiding in there
waiting to kill me."
     Jessie came out of the bathroom and said, "Well, in that case, I've
already checked the bathroom out. No crazy wanna-be murderers in there!"
     "Come on. I want to see if we can get to that object in the ice today."
Hadji said, opening the door.
     "Ok. Contessa, you and Angelica are free to use whatever you want in
here. Mi casa est su casa!" Jessie said, grabbing her bag with her notes and
stuff in it.
     "Ok. Bye!" Contessa said.
     "Later!" Hadji and Jessie said as they left.
     "Jessie, there's something I wanted to ask you." Hadji said.
     "Yeah?" Jessie said.
     "I was wondering, if..." Hadji said, "When we get out of here, if you'd
like to go to Paris with me. I was thinking we could walk along the Champs-
Elysees, go to the Louvre..."
     "Oh!!!!" Jessie said, "You're asking m on a date!"
     "No!!!! Well,.....I mean.....yeah, I guess you could call it that." Hadji
said.
     "Well, in that case," Jessie said, "Most definitely."
     "Really!!!!!! I mean, really?" Hadji said.
     Jessie giggled and said, "I love it when you try and act all macho."
     Jessie leaned over, kissed Hadji on the cheek, and continued on, leaving
behind a started yet jubilant Hadji.
     Hadji and Jessie walked out of the living quarters igloo and to the lab
igloo. They walked into the lab to find Jonny and Emilio hard at work.
     "So, what are you guys working on?" Jessie said, putting down her bag.
     "We're trying to contact the ship that's bringing our supplies. We think
they're in the Strait of Magellan. If so, we probably can't raise them because
of all the bad weather in that region." Jonny said.
     "I'll check one of our satellites to see if there's bad weather in that
area." Hadji said, moving to a computer and starting to type.
     Within a minute, Hadji had connected to a satellite and said, "Yep. We've
got bad weather in the Straits. Don't worry! They'll make it!"
     "I'm sure of that." Jonny said, "So, what are you two going to work on?"
     "We're going to get the men working on digging out that object I found
yesterday so we can examine it." Jessie said.
     "Good. Tell me when you have it." Jonny said.
     "Will do!" Jessie said, sitting in front of a computer.
     Later on.....
     Angelica sat up, yawning. ::Where is everyone?:: thought Angelica ::Oh
well! I'll just fix me some breakfast and I'll find them.:: Angelica went to
the cabinet, grabbed a box of cereal and a bowl, poured the cereal, poured
milk on top of it, and sat down in front of the T.V. to watch something. Since
they couldn't receive T.V. transmissions until the satellites were linked up,
she decided to watch one of Jessie's tapes, so she slipped one into the VCR
and sat down again. Then, an image of Contessa tied up and blindfolded came on
the screen.
     "My....." Angelica said, jumping up, spilling the cereal.
     "Get out." said a deliberately muffled voice on the tape, "Get out now,
or else. All of you shall end up like this."
     Angelica got up and went to the bathroom to cry, but she stopped in the
doorway when she saw Contessa tied up, lying in the bathtub.
