You'ld all kill me if I scrap this project...since Maverick said he
wouldn't continue his script if I didn't continue it *grin*

It's safe to assume that people who believe that Reality Bites live in
the world on their own creation. A world fashioned by their own
imagination...through art, through dreams, through anything one
perceives as her destiny. Where the impossible is possible, where
dreams are reality, where the end is endless....a mixture of paradoxes
all blended together in one fantastic realm.
Some call it a place for dreamers, those who defy Reality on their own
accord. Others call it hogwash, that such a world exists. And still,
others believe that this is a realm of beginnings, endings, and
eternity....where nothing is limited as long as the person has a
complete control of her visions.
Though the place remains nameless, I believe the third statement.
Where visionaries like us are given a perchance to dream, to explore the
possibilities of one's mind, one's imagination.
	I called this place Ether.

A.C.E. NON-JQ PRODUCTIONS hesitantly presents........
			E. T. H. E. R.
	   (Everything Through Heart, Everything Real)

I figured that Ether was a perfect name for the place. Webster defined
it as "An imaginary substance regarded by the ancients as filling all
the space beyond the sphere of the moon, and making up all the stars and
planets."
Ether is a substance that creates, yet it exists as something unproven,
something unreal. Something that makes things possible.
Something that works like a person's mind, one's imagination.
Something that captures the attention of everyone's soul.
In my case, however, it went through extremes. It captured my
attention alright.......
	By pulling me in. PHYSICALLY.
And so my journey on Ether begins.

EPISODE THREE: THE HALFLING

The group passed through the dark forest which surrounded them. In
Alexis' eyes, it was quite forbidding in several areas, yet somehow in
reasons she could not explain, there was a distinctive calmness to the
place.
Maliha and her troop of elves stopped in front of a tall, vine wall,
leaves and thorns twisting and intertwining in its wake. Several,
multi-colored blossoms decorated the wall in some areas. They were
large, white shimmery flowers, with dewdrop shaped petals and large,
pollen filaments sticking out of them. They radiated a glow from
within.
"What are..." Alexis commented, gesturing towards the flowers.
"Lumina Bells," Ann said, stepping beside the stranger. "They're
pretty common around these parts. Shale's well known for them, since
unlike the other continents over the Varr, its the only continent where
one can see white Lumina Bells."
"It is also the flower of Terran Elves," Maliha spoke up, fingering the
delicate petals with gentleness. Through centuries, we Terrans mastered
the art of extracting Soulfire from these blossoms for our own sorcery."
	"Soulfire?"
To emphasize her point, Maliha waved her hand in front of one of the
closed flowers. The unusual blossom sprang open and glowed. The vines
started moving, hissing as it unravelled and shook.
Alexis and Ann gaped with awe as the unravelling vine wall split apart
in the middle. The glow from the flowers spread as the vines
intertwined again, twisting and weaving among themselves.
When the rustling stopped. The vine wall was gone, replaced by two
tall, thick vine pillars with interwoven blossoms, framing the entrance
to the Terran Elves' citadel.
"That entire thingamajig with the vines never ceases to amaze me," Ann
told Alexis, grinning. Alexis could merely nod in awe.
The citadel was beatiful to say the least. While Alexis assumed that
it was more like a village for a tribe of elves, it wasn't. Tall,
crystal and stone buildings rose from the grassy ground. The citadel
itself was bustling with activity. It looked like a fantastical version
of Boston...with less concrete and more natural organic environment.
"Environmentalists would love this place," she commented wryly.
Ann shook her head. "I swear, lady, you gotta stop talking like
that," the child replied. She tugged at her sleeve. "C'mon, Maliha's
taking us to her place."
Maliha and her elves started walking towards the citadel. As Ann and
Alexis wove their way through the crowds, a spark of light caught the
teenager's eye.
She gaped at the building which stood in front of her. A tall spire
was the object which gave off that spark of light from the sun. And it
was attached to a tall, large, majestic marble building, with glossy,
polished stone roofs. Golden arches framed the place, separating it
from the rest of the busy landscape where it was in the center of.
Alexis blinked at the building. "Well, MacDonald's, eat your heart
out," she murmured, her eyes on the golden arches and the marble
establishment within.
"Huh?" Ann asked. "Ya say something?"
Alexis opened her mouth, then sighed and shook her head.
"This way," Maliha said, gesturing to the building.
The two human girls followed their elven companions. Alexis couldn't
help but notice that the elven guards blocking the gate bowed their
heads as Maliha passed. She chewed her lip hesitantly, then followed
the rest.

"This is the High Palace of Gretcera," Maliha told them as they entered
the building, sweeping her hand around the great, green-carpeted marble
hall. "You will be well taken care of here."
Alexis clutched her notebook to her chest and looked around. The
interior design was breathtaking. All she wanted to do at that moment
was sit and draw what she saw.
Maliha turned to the other four elves with her, who were all female.
"Have the halfling brought to a chamber and have one of the palace
guards stand outside his door," she said. "Should he be uncivilized,
beautiful or not," she said, eyeing Alexis. "He will be executed."
Alexis nodded quietly. As the four other female elves carried the
young halfling off, Maliha snapped her fingers, a glow eminating from
her fingertips.
A pretty, young elf girl materialized in front of them, her long,
golden hair twisted in a braid. She was dressed in a long, green and
white dress, and she curtsied in front of Maliha.
"Have Ann and the foreigner brought to one of our guest chambers,"
Maliha told her. "And have a meal prepared for them. Ann is famished I
believe, and young Alexis is a stranger to our land. Prepare something
suitable."
The young elf-maird bowed again, then turned to Ann and Alexis.
"Please follow me," she said quietly, beckoning them to the flight of
stairs which lay at the end of the hall.
As they followed the elf, Ann started talking to Alexis.
"You haven't tried Terran cuisine yet, have ya?" she asked Alexis as
they made their way through the flight of stairs. "Very very good, I
only had it once in my life and that was when I first met Maliha."
Alexis nodded as the elf gestured to one of the spacious rooms on the
second floor of the building.
"She was still kindasorta a magic wimp before back then," Ann said. "I
was only eight. She totally screwed up a fire spell and I saved her
from it. Her father rewarded me. And I became one of Maliha's friends.
Later on, I got hired for several stuff....y'know, like spy on
anarchists, steal valuable information, you know. Since I'm a young
kid, a lot of people don't suspect me carrying valuable information."
Alexis looked at Ann curiously as the elf maid shuffled them inside a
room. "So...what is Maliha really?" Alexis asked. "Is she a princess?"
Ann shook her head. "Nah," she told her. "But she's a noble living in
the king's court. Her father's the Duke of Earl, it's in another
country somewhere in the east. She has an older brother named Shawn,
who happens to be the Duke's heir. You know how it goes, when the old
man gets it, Shawn inherits his title."
"The Duke of Earl?" Alexis inquired, raising her eyebrow.
"Yeah," Ann said, flopping down one of the red, plush cushions on the
floor. "Earl's a part of another citadel somewhere in Krystopolis.
Terran elves have a lot of forest territories outside Shale, you know.
Maliha's the elf princess' cousin, so she gets to visit here whenever
she wants."
	"I see...."
Alexis surveyed the room they were brought into. Red and gold
tapestries hung from the large, glass-paned windows in the room. Two
large, soft cushions sat atop an elaborately embroidered rug, with a low
table in the center. Two soft, red-silked beds stood between two tall,
golden torchbrands at the far end of the room, their light giving a
soft, warm yellow glow inside the room.
"Nice, isn't it?" Ann remarked appreciatively. "Terran Elven Culture's
really sophisticated and stylish, not like their wild counterparts which
live atop the mountains."
She eyed the notbeook Alexis was holding. "Say, what's that anyway?
Looks like a book."
"It's a notebook," Alexis said, sitting in front of Ann on one of the
red cushions. "It's for writing."
Ann raised an eyebrow. "Writing?" she asked. "Are you a bard or
something? One who writes poetry and stories?"
"No...." Alexis replied. "I write stories, but I'm not a bard. I only
do this sort of thing to pass time."
Ann held her hand out. "Can I see?"
Alexis hesitated, then reached over and handed the red-yellow-green
covered notebook in the child's outstretched hand.
"My handwriting's really messy," she told her as Ann started flipping
over the pages.
Ann's brow wrinkled at the sight of jotted down story fragments written
in dark, black ink. Her eyebrows flew up as she flipped another page
and read the capitalized letters out loud. "WARNING: Citrus Content?"
Alexis' pale cheeks flushed pink as she reached out to grab the
notebook out of Ann's hand. "Err...ah..you didn't see that," she
muttered, slapping the cover shut. Ann looked at her strangely, then
chuckled.
"Secretive, aren't we?" she asked innocently. "You really are a
strange sort..."
Alexis grimaced. She hated blushing, and she always thought it was too
much of a feminine gesture for her overall attitude.
The elf girl entered the room silently once again, bringing hot,
steaming plates of food and set them on the low table before them.
Ann beamed. "Great! Food's here!" she exlaimed, grinning at Alexis.
"Let's eat!"
With that, Ann grabbed a fork and started eating ravenously. Alexis
blinked at the child. Though she's seen it in lots of cartoons, seeing
a live person devour food at a rapid rate in front of her was a new
experience.
Ann stopped at mid-chewing, gaping at her black-haired companion. She
swallowed. "Hey, why aren't ya eating?" she asked. "The food's good."
Alexis shook her head. "I don't usually eat dinner," she told her. "I
only eat once a day."
	"WHAT?!" Ann cried. "You're kidding!"
Alexis shook her head. "Long story. Anyways, it kindasorta became a
habit, so..." The sixteen year old shrugged.
"Jeez, no wonder you look pale and somewhat sickly," Ann grumbled,
chewing a piece of meat. "Whatsa matter, can't stand food or what?"
"Nothing," Alexis said defensively. "I just don't feel like eating a
lot. Besides, I usually do other stuff. Like write or draw. I'm
usually busy most of the time."
Ann gulped down some water. "Oh okay...well, at least here you can get
some relaxation," the twelve year old said. "Wonder what's up with that
halfling....trying to eat us and all." She snorted. "He better behave
himself or whatever and try not to eat anybody. Usually, Wyverns have
pretty nasty tempers when mad and they tend to curse a lot when annoyed,
not to mention they have quite an ego. Don't know if this applies to
half-Wyverns like the blond guy we brought in, but still, ya never
know."
Alexis looked at Ann in awe. "How can she talk so fast?!" she thought
in amazement.
The teenager merely sighed and flipped over some pages, folding the
incriminating page that Ann read aloud from. She started writing
another passage in her notebook as Ann continued to eat her dinner:

The black-haired girl continued to stare at her young companion
scarfing down her meal. She thought it was strange that the young one
could talk so much while doing so, but in a sense, she felt comfortable
with the talkative mercenary.
She didn't know what to expect, and her wind wandered off back to the
scene in the woods when they first found the halfling Wyvern. She
remembered the elven noble's statement, and wondered what she meant when
she revealed that Dragons and Wyverns were different from each other.
The teenager heard the mercenary's statement earlier about halflings
being banished from their families as the result of breaking their laws,
and couldn't help but assume that the half-Wyvern was a deviation from
the descriptions the child mercenary gave her, a non-conforming rogue
amidst his other flying cousins.
And she had a feeling that she was bound to find out more sooner or
later....

Leaving off with that statement, Alexis shut her notebook. Ann was
finished with her meal, leaving some food for Alexis in case the older
girl changed her mind about eating.
"Well, I guess it's time I take a quick noon nap," Ann said, getting up
slowly from her cushion. She grinned at the black-haired teenager.
"Try to stay outta trouble, 'kay?"
Alexis blinked as Ann walked over to her bed, then curled in the
covers. She got up from her cushion and walked outside the room,
determined to explore the rest of the palace.

She found herself walking down the green carpet in the third floor of
the palace. Though the palace was very beautiful, she couldn't help but
feel the somewhat cold and stiff, formal atmosphere. By any means,
Alexis actually preferred the outside, bustling activity of the outside
of the golden arches of the place.
She stode on the lush carpet absently, taking in the interior design of
the place, with the elaborate, curving carvings of dragons and unicorns
along the beams supporting the roofs down to the plants lining the
balcony areas of the hall. She heard a distinctive snore coming from
her right, and spotted an elf guard lolling to sleep in front of the
door.
"That must be where the halfling is," she mused. Forces and several
personas battled in her brain and finally, as usual, Curiosity won. She
stepped in beside the guard quietly, then opened the heavy, oak door
quietly with a crack.
She stepped inside the dim room, lighted by only one candle stick in
the center of a wooden table. Shadows cast over a white sheeted bed in
the far right corner, and the room was smaller than the chamber she and
Ann were in earlier.
She felt a slight movement behind her, something she always seemed to
be able to pick up on ever since she reached her teenaged years, and
instinctively turned her head. A head loomed in front of her, hands
clawed and upright in a grabbing position.
The two froze, looking at each other, eyes wide.
Alexis gave a strangled yelp as the other moved to grab her wrist. She
clamped her captured hand over the wrist of the hand holding on to her
wrist while her free one clamped tightly on the hand itself. She
excerted a twisting movement while jerking her body sideways.
"OW! Owowowowowowow...." a pained, male voice yelped as Alexis
continued twisting, her eyes wide. "Leggo! You're breaking my arm!!!"
Alexis released her hand over his wrist and the person fell into the
light, clutching his wrist, groaning. She recognized the halfling from
earlier, and her eyes grew even bigger.
"What's the big idea trying to grab me like that?!!!!!" Alexis cried,
backing away from the young male. "You SCARED me!"
The halfling looked at her exasperatedly from the stone floor. "Jeez,
normally, women would just scream, not try break the person's hand off!"
he said, cringing slightly. "It's not like I'm not hurt bad enough
already."
The half-Wyvern stood up and Alexis got a closer look. He was tall,
the sandy shade in his hair was in actuality a light shade of brown, and
blue eyes, about seventeen years old. The black-and-blue tunic was
loosened slightly, bandages covering the person's chest and torso. A
bruise was starting to form over the side of his forehead.
Alexis tilted her head to the side and frowned with thought. She
thought he kinda looked like cross between Travis Crenshaw and Jonny
Quest, more like her version from JQ 2000.
The brown-haired male tapped his foot on the ground impatiently.
"Well? You done inspecting me now?" he asked.
Alexis snapped out of her thoughts. "Sorry," she said quickly. "It's
just you remind me of someone I...err...know. Kinda."
The lad shrugged and flopped down the bed. For some reason, the candle
light grew brighter in the room. Alexis frowned at the realization, but
decided to to call attention to it.
"Oh," the halfling spoke up, his face registering recognition. "It's
you. You're the one who was coming up with a menu for me at the
forest."
Alexis blinked. "Oh, well.....I had to convince you not to kill me,"
she replied grudgingly, setting herself down on the nearby wooden stool
next to the table.
The halfling eyed her warily. "So.....got any water?" he asked.
"Flapping wings in the air trying to chase a couple of fast runners
kinda dehydrated me a bit."
The teenager blinked. "Well, no...but there's the elf maid who can
bring you some," Alexis replied.
The door opened softly, and both turned to see the young elf maid from
before, carrying a pitcher and cups of water.
"I heard your request," the elf maid said, bringing the water over the
table and poured some into the cups. "Call me anytime you need
something."
The elf maid gave them a curtsy before starting to dissolve into the
air.
The half-Wyvern blinked at the fading form as Alexis handed him a cup
of water.
"Just one question," Alexis told the young, brown-haired male as the
elf maid left. She eyed the bandaged lad. "Why didja try chasing me?"
The young man raised an eyebrow. "I was hunting....Wyvern's are meat
eaters, y'know," he told her as he took a sip of water. He eyed the
girl strangely. "Hey....what's with the strange clothes?"
Alexis looked at him flatly. "I'm not from around here," she told
him. "It's kinda obvious. I'm not exactly used to running into a bunch
of elves and a child mercenary, not to mention being changed by a Wyvern
who turns out to be human in the next minute."
The boy chuckled. "Boy, you got it rough," he replied. He gave her a
grudging smile. "Thanks for stopping them from killing me," he said
gratefully. "It's not everyday a strange girl would call me
'beautiful'."
Alexis took a sip of water. "I meant your draconic..."
	"Wyvern."
She sighed. "Fine, Wyvern," she replied. "I meant your Wyvern form.
It's not everyday I get to see one...well, YOU'RE the first one I've
seen in real life, though I've seen lots of pictures."
The halfling's blue eyes landed on the yellow, red, and green covered
notebook she had on her lap. "Alexis, huh?" he inquired, gesturing at
the name in black ink scribbled on the cover."
"Yeah. At your service," Alexis replied. "What's your name?"
The lad leaned back on the wall, grimacing a little at the bruises on
where he landed on the ground.
"Well, my Wyvern name's Xalcathon," the halfling replied. "But in
human form, my name's Rogue."
Alexis blinked. "Rogue?" she thought. "Didn't I write that in my
notebook earlier?"
As she pondered the thought, Rogue looked at her curiously. "You look
kinda confused," he observed. "I mean, if ya don't know what the
difference between a Dragon and a Wyvern is, Dragons are bigger and use
more magic. They have hordes of gold and jewels and they breathe fire a
lot, that or poisonous gas. Wyverns are smaller, most of us are limited
to two feet and poisonous stings. We do magic, too."
As he spoke, he noticed Alexis narrowing her eyes. "Umm..what's with
the face?" he asked.
Alexis blinked, then turned back to the lad. "Oh, I was just thinking
about something." She shook her head. "Nah..coincedence, I'm sure.
So...Rogue? You're...err....civilized, aren't you?"
He gave her a lopsided grin. "Heh. I didn't gnaw your limbs off yet,
did I?" he prompted.
Alexis raise her eyebrows. "YET?" she emphasized.
	"Why ask?"
Alexis told her about his impending execution if he didn't behave
himself. She also told the confused Wyvern that he was in the Terran
Elves' citadel, since he didn't know where he was.
Rogue whistled. "Oooooh, forbidden territory, eh?" he remarked.
"Terran Elves are kinda strict in their decorum, and almost no one but
other elves are able to get in their citadel."
Alexis raised her eyebrow. "What compelled them to bring me and you
along, then?" she asked out loud, more to herself than the brown-haired
halfling.
"Probably 'cause you're unusual," Rogue pointed out, gesturing to her
clothes. "You're a stranger around these parts, right? So they're bound
to be interested at what you might know that they don't. They probably
brought me here 'cause a) they'll most likely turn me into some sorta
house pet or b) make me into a slave. Not much different between the
two choices but hey, that's life for ya."
"A PET?" Alexis asked doubtfully. "But you're....human. Well, half
human, but STILL."
Rogue rolled his eyes. "Oh yeah, big whoop," he told her. "Elves
mostly consider themselves higher above humans, so having one as a slave
or pet ain't exactly breaking their code of ethics."
	"I...see."
	"Are you always this naive?"
Alexis bristled. "Hey," she growled defensively. "Gimme a break, I'm
new around here."
Rogue leaned back on the wall and gave her a smirk. "Just WHERE are
you from anyway?" he asked curiously.
Alexis stood up. "You won't believe me if I told you," she told him,
looking at him with a sideways glance.
The halfling shrugged. "Well, I've seen things you wouldn't believe,
either. Try me."
Alexis shook her head and started walking back to the door. "Nah,
maybe some other time, I'm giving myself a tour of the place, just in
case they wanna keep me here for life as a 'pet'."
She laid a hand on the door handle. Rogue raised an eyebrow,
"So.....I'm just a stop on the tour then?" he teased.
Alexis raised an eyebrow back. "Maybe," she retorted, unruffled.
She yanked the door open and walked outside, calmly sidestepping the
sleeping guard as she let the heavy door close behind her.
The halfling shook his head when she left and chuckled.

Several hours later, after taking a good look of the palace, Alexis
continued to walk rapidly back to the guest chamber she was brought in
earlier, her eyes narrowed. It was strange but somehow, she felt that
the early conversation with the halfling was expected even before she
actually had the conversation.
She stopped in the middle of the hall and flipped rapidly through her
notebook. She stared at the latest passage she wrote.
"......and couldn't help but assume that the half-Wyvern was a
deviation from the descriptions the child mercenary gave her, a
non-conforming rogue amidst his other flying cousins. And she had a
feeling that she was bound to find out more sooner or later...." she
read out loud. She slapped her notebook shut, frowning in thought.
"What the.....how did I know if I didn't have the conversation before I
wrote this?" she thought, disturbed. "Sure, it can be a coincedence,
but still..."
Alexis laughed softly to herself and shook her head. "That's stupid,
'Lex," her brain told her. "I mean, sure you're intuitive in a higher
degree than usual, but you're not psychic. If you were, you'd pass
semester exams no problem or have a 1600 in your SAT's."
"It WOULD be nice to get a 1600," she told her brain.
Whistling to herself, she walked back inside the red-and-gold guest
chambers. Ann was still asleep, sprawled on her back, snoring
slightly. Alexis shrugged to herself and walked to look out the
window. She sat near it, looking as the afternoon sun cast a red glow
as it descended slowly down the horizon. It was peaceful, and the
artist in her craved to take a picture.
Unfortunately, she didn't have her camera with her.
Alexis flipped open her notebook and started another fragment of a
different story as night descended. Her thoughts flowed freely as ink
on paper, an ability Maya Schehade, a friend of hers in English class,
usually commented on.
"Jeez Alexis, how can you write so much? I haven't even started writing
a sentence!" Maya laughed in Alexis' memory.
The teenager smiled ruefully to herself as she kept writing:

Darkness fell, and she suddenly found herself staring out in a dark,
glittery sky. She never thought time could pass so quickly that she
didn't even notice the twilight come.
The girl stood up slowly, feeling slightly hungry. She eyed the bowl
of fruit left by the maid on the table, and walked towards it.
She selected an apple, and heard a rustling sound behind her. A
muffled cry rose from the nearby sheets, and she whirled around
sharply....
Light flashed in front of her eyes, and her deep brown eyes widened as
she caught a glimpse of large, pointed fangs set in a pale face, with
glowing blue eyes.
She unleashed a loud, ear-splitting scream........

"Urgrhgfhbgg....." Ann murmured in her sleep, breaking Alexis' chain
of thoughts as she rolled over to her side and curled into a fetal
position.
Alexis capped her pen and looked at Ann curiously. "Ann must be having
some sorta dream..." she mused softly to herself.
She slapped her notebook, then turned to look out the window. The
afternoon sunset was already replaced by a sprinkle of starlights
overhead, set in dark blue. The citadel was still lit, though the
bustling activity in the morning lessened. She frowned, then stared at
her notebook. "Just how long have I been writing?" she asked herself.
Alexis felt her stomach growl slightly and sighed. It wasn't going to
stop unless she fed it, and she knew that much.
The black-haired girl got up and approached the table near the red
cushions she and Ann held their conversation on. "Oooh, fruit," Alexis
remarked, spotting a bowl of fruit on the table.
She reached out and took one of the three apples which were in the
black, polished bowl. Alexis froze, a thought nagging at her brain.
"Why do I sense a feeling of deja vu?" she asked herself as a
matter-of-factly. Her eyes narrowed as she heard a slight, rustling
sound behind her.
She bit on her apple, chewing in thought for what she would follow up
in her story. "Ann's probably turning over again," she thought.
She eyed the table, which was under the light of the blazing fire
torches in the room. Suddenly, a long shadow fell on it.
Alexis heard a soft, muffled cry reach her ears, coming from Ann's
direction. She whirled around sharply.
"A--" she began to shout, when her voice froze in her thoat.
Long fingers grasped her shoulders tightly as Alexis' brown eyes
widened in fear, taking in the pale face, the glowing blue eyes, the
sharp, glistening teeth, the swirls of soft, black cloth.
Her heart hammered in her chest as the blue eyes glowed even brighter.
A soft, hissing voice reached her ears. She felt her feet leave the
floor as the creature lifted her off the floor by her shoulders bodily.
"You shall come with us, Ashka-Lha..."
"ALEXIS!!!!" Ann cried, gasping as she struggled with her own
assailant, who was trying to wrap the sheets around her for bondage.
She fought fiercely against the tall, black figure looming above her,
desperation clawing at her soul.
Alexis paled, shock rendering her motionless as the creature holding
her opened its mouth to expose the full length of two, sharp fangs.
The shock wore off, and the sixteen year old gave out the loudest,
shrillest scream she ever unleashed.

Rogue cracked his knuckles. "Well well well...no one told me it was

"Hang on Alexis, we'll get ya down shortly."
"That's the only thing I CAN do!" Alexis yelped. "Do something! I
mean....torch it or eat it or something!"
Rogue grimaced at the idea. "You've GOT to be kidding," he retorted.
"I prefer my food fresh, not centuries-old dead."
"Will you two stop yapping!" Maliha snapped. "We're kinda missing the
