The Hunt

By Keirsten M. Spikes

December 1997

Jessie ran to the edge, she could see the ocean waves crash against the
cliff. It was pouring rain and she had no where to go. She turned and
looked for her assailant. She couldn’t see him, but she knew he was there,
waiting, trying to push her over the edge. Why had she decided to go for a
walk at midnight? She had to get away from here, she had to warn the
others.

She looked down at her watch and tried to activate the homing device, no
luck. It must have gotten too wet in the rain. She had to get to the
lighthouse and call the others from there. She ran strait for it, but two
men jumped in front of her. She was sure she could have gotten past one,
but she wasn’t sure about two. But she had to try for the others sake. She
darted at one hoping the other would come behind her. They did exactly what
she wanted them to do. Right before she was about to plow into the first
one, she turned, crouched down and tripped the second. As the first was
about to grab her, she turned around again, jumped up, grabbed his head and
kicked him hard in the stomach. He fell hard as she bolted past him.

Jessie reached the lighthouse and locked the door behind her. She ran over
to the intercom and tried it. The lines had been cut, these guys were
smart. She ran upstairs when she heard the two men start pounding on the
door. She had to try and signal her family another way. When she reached
the second floor she tripped over a box. Jessie crawled to her knees and
looked inside. Flares! She was in luck. Suddenly she heard a loud crack,
*They broke through the door!* She grabbed a flare and ran to the window.
She heard the men talking, then they started running up the stairs. She
quickly loaded the gun and shot it out the half open window toward the
mansion. Just then the two men reached the second floor where she was. They
ran toward her as if to trap her. She tried to dart past but the first man
hit her hard across the face, sending her crashing out the window. She
screamed as she saw the hood of the quest van getting closer, then
everything went black.

Jonny woke with a start. His room was filled with red light, he got up and
looked out the window. Was that a flare? He ran into the hallway to find
Hadji, Benton, and Race all standing there. "What was that?" he asked. "I
don’t know, but where’s Jessie?" Race asked. Just then the heard a scream
from outside. Jonny knew that scream, it was Jessie’s. They all rushed
outside and saw two men running across the yard. Jonny and Race took up hot
pursuit. When the men saw Race and Jonny coming after them, they turned
into the forest.

"Dr. Quest, look, that window is broken." Hadji said pointing to the
lighthouse. Benton ran over, but stopped as he noticed a body on top of the
crumpled van. Hadji quickly climbed on top and was horrified at the sight
of his friend’s body. "Who is it?" Dr. Quest asked, already knowing the
answer. "It is Jessie, she is alive, but badly injured." Hadji answered. He
must stay calm, she had done the same for him, he must for her*.

The two men split, one going toward the ocean, the other toward the road.
Jonny took the one heading for the ocean. It was obvious to Jonny that this
man was not in very good shape, because Jonny quickly caught up to him. *If
they did anything to Jessie, I swear,* Jonny reached up, grabbed the man’s
shoulder and pulled him back. As the man fell Jonny turned and pinned him
down. The man pushed Jonny off into some berry bushes, but Jonny didn’t
give up this easy for his friends. Jonny was up in a flash and he darted
toward the man. Just as Jonny got to him he moved to right and Jonny
couldn’t stop in time, he was going over the cliff! With grace Jonny
flipped and grabbed onto the cliff as he was falling over. The man walked
over and looked down. "Ha! Dumb kid." He said as he bent down to pry
Jonny’s grip off. *Bad mistake* Jonny thought, he grabbed the man’s hand
and pulled him over the cliff. Jonny looked down just in time to the man
disappear into the churning waters below. Jonny felt his grip slipping on
the wet rock he was holding onto, then there was no rock. As Jonny felt
himself falling all he could think was how much he had meant to tell
Jessie, they were just getting started and now it was all ending, and he
never got to say goodbye. Just then Jonny felt a strong grip on his wrist.
He looked up and saw Race pulling him up. When Race had pulled Jonny o the
top, they both fell into the wet mud. Catching his breath Jonny asked,
"What about the other one?" "He jumped over the wall that lines the cliff
further up." "But what about Jessie, we heard her scream." They both
started running back to the compound.

"Hadji, is she breathing alright?" Dr. Quest asked. "Yes, but her leg is
badly twisted." Then they heard rustling in the trees nearby. Jonny and
Race emerged covered with wet mud. "Where’s Jessie?" Jonny asked. "She is
here, but badly hurt." Hadji answered. Race was on top of the van in a
flash and carefully picked his daughter’s limp body up and handed it to
Jonny. Jonny, along with Hadji and Dr. Quest started to walk over to the
Quest Rover while Race got down. Jonny was horrified by his girlfriend’s
body. There was blood smeared on her face and her left leg was badly
twisted. At least he knew the men who did this to her was dead. They all
assisted in putting Jessie in the back seat and Hadji and Jonny sat on
either side of her. Race drove as fast as he could to the hospital in town.

When they got to the hospital the medics took her. After two hours of
waiting while Jessie was in surgery, the doctor finally came into the
waiting room where the Quest men sat rigid. "Jessie will be fine, but she
had concussion and that leg of hers will take months to heal. She also had
some other minor cuts and bruises, but I’m surprised she came out with what
she did." "When can we see her?" Race asked. "Well, she isn’t awake yet,
but as soon as the nurses have gotten her situated you may see her." With
that the doctor left the room.

The next morning Jessie slowly opened her eyes. All she could see was
peaches. Slowly her eyes got focused on what she was looking at. It was
wall paper with big fruits on it. She turned and looked around. Jonny was
sitting in a padded chair next to her asleep. Her dad was asleep in a chair
in the corner and Dr. Quest and Hadji were asleep in two more chairs on the
other wall. Then the door opened next to her father. "Hello! Nice to see
your all awake." A young nurse with a tray of food walked in and obviously
meant to wake up the men. They all slowly opened their eyes and realized
Jessie was awake. Jessie smiled when she saw the concerned looks she was
getting from the men. "Hi." Jessie said. She tried to move, but it was much
to painful. "Now, don’t you move a muscle, you’ve been in surgery to fix
that leg of yours and the doctor says your not to move." The nurse said as
she set the tray down next to Jessie’s bed. "I’ll leave you alone now, but
make sure she eats that." Indicating toward Race. "How do you feel?" Jonny
asked. "Like I’ve fallen out of a building, but I can’t fell my leg." She
answered. "That’s because you had to go into surgery to fix that leg of
yours." Race said. "Did you get those guys?" she asked. "Of course, you
think Race and I would let anyone get away?" Jonny answered. "No I guess
not."

One month later Jessie walked into the lighthouse looking for Jonny and
Hadji. There they were in the same place they always were, Jonny playing a
new game in Quest World and Hadji monitoring it. Except there was something
missing. Jessie put her finger to her lips so Hadji wouldn’t say anything.
Then she quietly sat down by Jonny and logged into Quest World. "Ha! That’s
the last one, right Hadji?" Jonny asked as he blew the plane in front of
him away. "I am afraid not, my friend, it seems you have another
challenger." Hadji said with a slight smile. Suddenly Jonny’s screen went
black. "Game over." He heard Jessie say. "Man! Next time, I will beat you."
He said as he took off his visor. Jessie just looked up and smiled.

what Jessie did for Hadji, so e-mail me with your comments, I might post
