The image floated there, looking over at him. She was
angelic. The scene left him breathless, to see her floating towards
him with her arms outstreched....
And then Jonathan Quest opened his eyes. He found himself
staring at the stars in the night sky. For a moment he didn't
remember where he was... Then he noticed the girl laying at his
side in the grass and he smiled. It had been just that dream
again... As the events of the day came back to him, a small smile
formed in his lips. Everything was right in the world.
Jonny kissed his companion in her forehead. She stirred
and opened her eyes, looking at him.
"Hi, handsome."
"Hi." he replied losing himself into her eyes behind her
glasses.
"Let me guess.. we fell asleep while watching the stars..."
"Yep. And for the look of the sky is past midnight. I
guess your parents must be somewhat worried by now."
"They can wait..." she cooed as she kissed him. After a
moment or two, he broke the kiss.
"I'd love to leave them waiting, but your father will
shoot me if I don't take you home right now."
"Great moment to turn responsable, Quest."
"Believe, m'am, I'm not happy about it, either" he replied
with a a quick peck on her lips. He stood up and helped her to her
feet.
He drove slowly, not really wanting to end this night
out with his.. girlfriend. He still surprised himself when thinking
about that word. He couldn't believe how lucky he was that the
prettiest and smartest girl in school felt something for him.
'Well, I'll get used to it' he thought. 'After all, our relationship
is only one day old.'
They reached her house and Jonny opened the door of the car
for her. She walked towards her home, opened the door and then blew
him a kiss while dissappearing inside.
Jonny smiled. Certainly, Elizabeth Jones was a great girl.
He opened the door slowly. There were lights in the TV room
and the sound of dialogue could be heard. With some luck, he would be
able to go to his room without being noticed and he wouldn't have to
explain...
"Jonny?"
Ooops. Too late.
The small girl ran at him, a seven year old made of pure
energy. Or at least so it seemed, because Jonny's batteries always
ran out before the little girl started to feel tired. That's why
he wasn't so surprised to see her as radiant and happy as she
looked every morning at breakfast.
She hugged him. Or at least hugged his legs. She had
always been like this, greeting him as if she hadn't seen
him in a year or so. Not that Jonny minded that his sister loved
him so much. "Where had you been?" she asked.
"None of your business, squid." he said as she ruffled her
hair. "How come you are not in bed yet, uh?"
"Tonight is the marathon of The Real Adventures of Captain
Atominizer" she replied. "And since tomorrow is Saturday, mom told me
I could stay awake all night. We are watching the episode where..."
He gulped. We?
As if in cue, a voice greeted him. "Good night, Jonny."
Rachel Quest stood in the door of the TV room. She had
a weird look in her face. Or at least it appeared so to Jonny
mainly because he had expected to see her angry or something like
that. But she was smiling, and with a little spark in her eyes.
"Now, Jenny, why don't you go to watch the TV? Doctor
Tarantula is almost ready to vanish Captain Atominizer into
the Dimension of Doom."
Jonny's sister nodded and dissapeared into the door,
leaving Rachel and Jonny alone.
"Er, um, mom, I..." he began.
She raised a hand. "There's no need to explain. I just
*know* that this has something to do with a raven haired girl
named Elizabeth, right?"
Jonny blushed. He had forgotten her mother's instinct for
these things. And since he couldn't gain nothing by denying the
fact that he had spent one of the best days of his life with
Liz, he nodded.
"Well, I knew this day would come, Jonny. I'm glad you
found such a nice girl to be with." then her face changed and took
a serious look. "But please, next time call in advance before
dissapearing. I was expecting you at ten."
Jonny nodded again, giving thanks to God for having such
a comprensive mother.
"Now go to sleep, honey. By the way, Fred called you.
He told me he was going to be awake until late night and he wanted
to hear from you."
Jonny kissed his mom on the cheek and went to his room.
Rachel watched her son go up the stairs, then she returned
to the TV set to spend some time with her daughter.
Jonny picked up the phone and punched an autodial button.
It only rang once before a familiar voice was heard.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Frederick! Were you looking for me?"
"Quest-man! Where had you been? Wait, don't tell me... It
has to do with a girl we both know, uh?"
Jonny blushed again. "Well, actually, Liz and I..."
"I knew it!" Fred exclaimed. "Oh, Quest, you are a very lucky
guy!"
"I know."
"So, tell me... What did you guys do? You left school at three
today. What can keep you busy for ten hours?"
"It is none of your business, pal!"
"Oh, it is! I'm your buddy, right? I have to know everything
to tell if the girl is the right one for you!"
Jonny laughed. He knew that his best friend was too.. curious.
He had pointed out that to him once, telling him that 'curiosity
had killed the cat'. Fred had just grinned and answered that the cat
didn't have an IQ of 180.
"Nothing special, pal" Jonny replied. "We just went for
a snack and we talked..." He smiled, remembering how so many feelings
had come out to the open, how he had felt when she had told him that
she felt something special for him, and the way her hazel eyes had
sparkled when he answered the feeling was mutual. How her hand had
felt so good under his when they had gone to watch that movie and
the warmth of her body on the hill while they were watching stars...
He remembered falling asleep at the rythmic sound of her breathing...
"Hello? Earth to Quest! Are you still there?"
He snapped back to reality. "Oh, yes, I'm here."
"I see." Jonny noticed a small tone of amusement in his
friend's voice, making him wonder how long had he been thinking
about the events of the day.
"I assume you didn't have to face your mother when you got
home."
"You are wrong. She was watching cartoons with Jenny. Oh,
I know she was waiting for me and the cartoon marathon gave her the
perfect excuse."
He heard a little laugh at the other end of the line. "I
see."
"Knowing mom she won't bring the topic back again, but I'm
sure she will send my dad to have with me a little father-son talk
about bees and flowers and such..."
"Your father is still in Greece, uh?"
"Yep. He is coming back this monday."
"So you'll live two more days...."
"By the way, what are you doing so late?"
"The same as Jenny. The new show of Captain Atominizer is
too good to be missed."
"I should have known..."
"Hey, not everybody has a _girlfriend_ in this town, you
know?" Jonny noticed the emphasis in the word, and he knew Fred
would be teasing him with it for the next week or so.
"Good night Fred, I'll see you tomorrow to do that physics
homework."
"Alright. Bring Hadji, maybe he can help us a little. But
please don't bring Liz. I'll need all your attention on the project!"
Jonny grinned. "Good night."
He hanged up. He knew tomorrow was going to be a day full
of teasing. But Fred had a point. If Liz had been in his science team,
then he certainly would have a hard time concentrating. Specially
after today...
He wondered if Liz could talk to Martha to convince her to
give Fred a chance. That way they could arrange a double date...
The ring of the phone interrumpted his thoughts.
"Hello?"
"Good night, handsome."
"Liz! Uh, I wasn't expecting your call... Is something wrong?"
"No, not at all. Dad was waiting for me, alright, but he took
it calmly, specially after I said we had been in a studying group."
"What?"
"Don't worry. Martha will cover both of us. I have to find
the right moment to give the news to my father, you know..."
"You are right... I think. But didn't he find too suspicious
that you arrived in my car?"
"He didn't saw it. He was sleeping in the couch and I had
to wake him up."
Jonny smiled. "When are you going to tell him?"
"Not tomorrow, that's sure. Somewhere along the week, I
suppose..."
They kept talking. And talking. And talking. When they
hanged up, more than an hour had passed by. They would have talked
more, but the excitement of the day had finally taken his toll on Liz.
As Jonny turned out the lights on his room, he couldn't
believe how lucky had he been. True, Liz wasn't the girl of his
dreams, but it was as close as he could get.
He closed his eyes. Liz was so smart and funny and
beautiful... She wasn't afraid of taking risks, but she actually
thought before taking them. She loved speed, but she was far from
reckless. She was someone you could talk about anything, from
arts to science... She was, as far as Jonny could tell, perfect.
As perfect as reality would allow.
He fell asleep thinking of Liz. He had expected that the
girl in his dreams would now be replaced by her, but he didn't have
such luck.
He had the dream again. He saw the girl, dressed in a green
blouse that matched her eyes, her fiery mane caressed by the wind...
To be continued!
