"So, what's for lunch?" Jessie Bannon asked, pushing her weightless
body across the small space of the 'kitchen'.
"Pizza," her companion, Jonny Quest, answered happily. "Looks like
the government decided to reward us." He handed her a small tube. Jessie
squeezed the orange mixture in her mouth, moaning with pleasure. "Can't
wait until they let us have chicken."
Jonny laughed. "They haven't figured out how to dehydrate that yet?
Jeez." He paused. "Man, I wish we had real food again." The middle-aged
man grabbed greedily for the tube, but Jessie quickly pulled it away from
his grasp. She moved her finger from side to side, 'tsk tsk tsking' him.
"Gotta wait for me to be done. Ladies first."
Jonny sighed, and looked out of a small porthole in near the small
microwave. A dozen, similar looking pods floated eerily against the black,
starry background. He could almost make out some of the faces. A sudden
thought raced through his mind as he remembered the date.
"Jess, Hadji's pod'll be here in a few days, remember?" Jonny told
her as if that were the answer to the world's overpopulation.
Jessie nearly choked on the mushy substance that sat in her mouth.
She coughed, then looked at Jonny excitedly, her emerald eyes twinkling. "I
almost forgot! Are the docking controls prepared?"
"Yeah. I fixed them last night."
        "Great!"
A few minutes passed in silence. Jonny was staring at her like a
little lost puppy, his eyes going big and azure as possible. He whimpered.
"Are you done yet?" he asked, his voice sounding plaintive.
Jessie felt almost sorry for him. Almost.
"Mmmm..I dunno." She paused, to let him know she was in charge of
this. "Yeah, I guess so." Jessie quietly handed him the tube, thinking of
again snatching it away, but thought better of it. The last time that
happened, their first microwave had flown somehow been ejected out into
space, slamming into a passing pod.
"Remember-" Jonny gulped as he caught himself through swallows,
"remember QuestWorld?"
        The two burst out laughing.
        "Qu...QuestWorld?" Jessie giggled. "Ha!"
        "I know, I know..."
The two quieted down after a moment, but the silence didn't last for
long. A question popped up into Jonny's mind, one that had popped up years
before but he never dared ask: "Do you think we'll ever get to go back to
earth?"
Jessie stared at him. "I don't know. But I doubt it. Remember,
the earth has more that it can hold, and the government knows what its
doing..." She trailed off as she realized what she said was obsurd. "What
am I saying?"
"You're saying the government's right," Jonny supplied. She smacked
him in the shoulder.
"Oh, well, we shouldn't worry about it." Jessie ran a hand down her
rumpled metallic jumpsuit. "At least we're together."
"Yeah," Jonny agreed. "Wanna listen to some of my CDs?"
        "You still have CDs?"
        "Mm-hmm. And a player."
He pulled out a personal walkman from an automatically openeing
drawer, and pushed a CD in. "Didn't think I'd ever need it. Been here
since we first came...when was it?"
"We were about twenty." Jonny whistled in awe. "That long, eh?
Well, here's our favorite..."
The sound from the small disc player erupted through the room.
'We'll be singing, when we're winning, we'll singing...' it began
softly, but then suddenly went into full heavy metal rock, "I GET KNOCKED
DOWN, BUT I GET UP AGAIN, AIN'T NEVER GONNA KEEP ME DOWN, I GET KNOCKED
DOWN, BUT I GET UP AGAIN, AIN'T NEVER GONNA KEEP ME DOWN..."
Jessie grinned wildly, and began to sing with the CD, and soon Jonny
too began to sing.
