On this date in history:

1493 - Just 10 months after being the first European on American soil, Columbus heads a gay pride festival for Native Americans.

1629 - Garrett Hummon, an American colonist, is hanged for crimes he did not commit, hence the cliche, "he's gonna get hanged like a Hummon".

1988 - During a softball game, Maria Hummon, descendant of Garrett, is accidentally killed by a bat that slips out of the batter's hands, hence the cliche, "beaten like a bitch".

1993 - An iguana race is held in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The iguana that wins gets an endorsement deal with Nike. Nike backs out of the deal a month later claiming that "iguanas don't wear shoes".
