WOLO makes by far the best and most "authentic" dixie horn around. Supposedly this is the horn actually used on the show. To order one,
you want to call JC Whitney, an automotive part mail order company, at 312-431-6102 by phone, or fax them at 312-431-5625. The ad is usually somewhere between pages 45 - 55 of the catalog. You want the ad that says "MUSICAL AIR HORNS - CHOICE OF 14 POPULAR SONGS!," not the obvious one with the confederate flag next to it. This one plays 12 notes and the other one plays 11, a big difference. I'm sorry if you saw this page before and ordered the wrong one. Apparently, I had ordered the wrong one and JCWhitney sent me the right on by mistake. I think the horns were on sale at the time and they probably thought a dixie horn is a dixie horn. The right one has red trumpets, not black. The item number should read 81FX8840T, and it retails for 59.99 + shipping, which varies on where you live. It comes with five bells (trumpets), the compressor, bolts, and tubing. To install it, you will have to drill 6 holes and hook up some wiring. To install mine in the charger, I drilled 5 holes horizontally on the opposite side of the radiator support.(be careful not to drill through the radiator! I put a big saw between the support and the radiator to prevent that.) Put the horns on pointing down to keep water out of them. You can see the bright red horns through the grille from far away though, so I sprayed mine black before I put them in. You can mount the compressor on the support for the grille, which will be about a foot below the horns. Try to arrange the bells and the compressor as close to each other as possible because it will sound better if you use less tubing. The horns and the compressor are color coded, so it's really easy to hook up the tubing. You have to cut it yourself, so leave a little extra on each piece so you don't cut it too short.(you get alot of tubing with the kit but if you need more, any plumbing supplier should be able to sell you some) The compressor has two terminals on it - a positive and negative. If you don't have a wire kit, you can get one for about five bucks. Run a wire from the negative of the compressor to the ground for the washer pump. Then run a wire from the positive terminal inside the car. Instead of drilling a hole in the firewall, I just loosened the wipermotor and slid the wire between the motor and the gasket. If your charger still has the little "looms" along the firewall, use them to keep the wire from melting on the block. You will have to buy a horn button or find a push-button switch in the car you don't plan on using. You can get a switch either from the catalog or any auto parts store. I think even K-mart has it. Keep in mind that you can't just hit the switch - you have to hold it down until it goes through the notes and then let off, or else it will just keep playing. This means it has to be in a place that's comfortabe to work while driving, like next to the high beam switch on the floor or on the underside of the dash. If you are putting in a CB, you can mount the cb under the ash tray and mount the button on the side of the cb. I found that this works well and doesn't destroy the dash or put holes in the floor. It needs a 25 amp fuse, so I just put a 25 amp in the fuse block where the 12 volt wire comes in. That block terminal should have "prongs" on the other side that you can attatch a wire connector to, rather than splicing it in. I think the relay is hooked by attatching the wire from the pos on the compressor, the wire to the fuseblock, a ground, and the pos on the switch. Please check your instructions, though. Don't worry if it makes a faint whine before it plays, that's normal. Here is an important trick - if you don't do it the horn will be very slow - disconnect the air hoses to the horns so it isn't breaking your ear drums and have somebody push the button while you add oil to the "oil" hole. Be sure to use a good multipurpose oil - I got some furnace oil from a plumber friend and boy does that horn go! Let it go for a few seconds and keep squeezing the oil and let it run out the side as it spins. Do this about 4 times in a short period - like 3 days. Be careful when you test it out - it's really loud - 118 decibles. I put mine in in about 2 hours and that includes all the drilling and wiring. Tighten up the nuts every so often because they have a tendency to vibrate loose. Set includes trumpets, tubing, compressor, relay, mounting hardware, and instructions for all negative-grounded 12 volt vechicles. You can charge to visa, mastercard, discover/novus, american express, or american express optima.
