The story of Ninja Scroll takes place in Feudal Japan where we are shown the village of Shimota
which has been ravaged by a mysterious plague.
Upon further investigation, the Koga ninja team have been sent to investigate the
deaths surrounding the village. On the way there the pass through a very dense forest
they are ambushed by a mysterious rockskinned monster (the first of many excellent enemies,
each with his or her own special power). Needless to say their was large battle...
The story continues from there, as the sole survivor of the village, Kagero, helps Jubei
Ninpacho investigate the plague. As the ninja team get closer and closer to the truth, more
and more minions of the evil behind the plague are sent to stop them. Their quest brings them
up against some very interesting characters who are powerful and worthy adversaries.
Many action sequences stand out, such as the swordfight
with a blind samurai in a bamboo patch, the rockskinned monster who cannot be cut, and the
master of the killer bees. Since most of the movie is the conflict between Jubei and his
enemies, this movie is highly action orientated, which makes it so good. The plot is not
complex, yet there is much internal conflict Jubei must face. He is infected with poison,
and has only one chance for the cure, but struggles with his morals that won't allow him to
use the antidote (I don't want to give away too much here.....).
The movie builds up to an exciting climax, as Jubei
confronts the almost immortal fiend responsible for the plague on his escape ship, which
happens to be burning and sinking to the bottom of the ocean (this guy takes more damage
than the Argo itself!).
Although this movie has some brief graphic sexual scenes that are
completely unnecessary, it is an excellent movie and probably one of, if not, my favorite.
The animation and smooth flow of action really keep your attention, and by the end of the
movie you can't believe it is over. This is one
of the best Anime movies ever made and should be on your to watch tonight list!
