Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Woolvett secured an agent at the tender age of 12, and attended the Theater Aquarius, which is the alma mater of SCTV actors Martin Short and Eugene Levy. Woolvett achieved early success as an actor and performed in commercials, in theater and on television.
Woolvett jokingly comments that his older brother James caught the acting bug after he compared his paycheck from his job at McDonald's with that of Gordon's paycheck from a McDonald's commercial. James Woolvett has achieved his own success in the field with roles in the feature films Unforgiven and Rosewood to his credit.
Woolvett's television credits include starring roles in the series' Mysterious Island, filmed in New Zealand for the Family Channel, Peacekeepers, for the CBC, Learning the Ropes and Airwaves. He was nominated for a Gemini award (the Canadian equivalent of the Emmys) for his role of a cancer patient in the television movie Princes in Exile.
Included in Woolvett's repertoire is a stint as host of the Nickelodeon series Wildside. In that wild life series he "wallowed in a mud pond with three Cape Buffalo, was chased up a tree by a zebra, stampeded by a herd of elephants, and bitten by a cheetah."
Woolvett cites Gary Oldman, Kirk and Michael Douglas and Patrick Stewart as actors whose work he admires. Speaking of Stewart, Woolvett proudly admits to being a "Trekkie." Woolvert claims that he can identify any episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation by its first 10 seconds. "I'm a fan of the 'basis in reality' of science fiction. I think that Mission Genesis is similar to ST:TNG in the sense that we deal with real issues like cloning," he says.
In his spare time he likes to write comedy,
drama, and particularly science fiction
stories.
