SYNOPSIS

He had served as a secret agent for the government, but Robert McCall had grown disillusioned by all the double-dealing that he had seen over the years. Now retired, McCall, who had been known throughout his espionage career as "The Equalizer," attempted to be just that for people who found themselves facing seemingly hopeless situations. Operating his one-man security force from a plush Manhattan apartment, he found his clients through ads he placed in the local newspapers urging people in dire straits to contact The Equalizer. He was both detective and the bodyguard, and was only occasionally helped by his former Agency boss, known only as Control. McCall sought to do good on a personal level - as a form of penance for his previous life - often for little or no pay.

Also seen were Mickey, who did much of McCall's legwork; Scott, his impulsive young son; and assorted members of the N.Y.P.D. Turning up in late 1987, as the owner of a little bistro which McCall began to frequent, was a former friend from his Agency days, Pete O'Phelan.
