SYNOPSIS
These
were not everyday sporting events. They were "games" played for novelty
and amusement, often with an eye for the bizarre or ridiculous. Some of
the "competitions" shown were for such titles or in such events like "America's
Toughest Bouncer," "World's Bellyflopping Champion," "The Billiards Battle of
the Generations," "Backwards Motor Racing," "Taxi Cab Demolition," "Three-Ton
Tug of War," and the "Disk Jockey Invitational Talk-Off." Bryant
Gumbel and Cyndy Garvey were co-hosts; Mike Adamle, Johnny Bench, Donna
DeVarona, and Arte Johnson were regular field reporters at the locations
around the country where the events had taken place; and Gary Owens was
the announcer. In addition to the regulars, there were weekly guest stars serving as commentators,
among them athletes such as Dorothy Hamill, Bruce Jenner, and Reggie Jackson,
sports announcers such as Marv Albert and Joe Garagiola, and entertainment
celebrities such as Darren McGavin, Tanya Tucker, Erik Estrada and James Coburn.
