SYNOPSIS
After 23 years as a doctor in the U.S. Army, Sid Rafferty had retired from the service to open a private practice. Used to military discipline and equipped with a very short temper, the idealistic and stubborn Rafferty was not the easiest person to get along with. He did things his way, resented the other doctors - particularly because of their tendency to cover up for each other's shortcomings - and was often at odds with the staff of City General Hospital, where he performed his surgery.
Rafferty's young associate in his practice was Daniel Gentry, whose free-wheeling personal life was in deep contrast to Rafferty's more conservative style. Their nurse / receptionist Vera Wales, was thoroughly professional in the office but madly in love with widower Rafferty.
