SYNOPSIS
Created by funnyman, Mel Brooks, this situation comedy was actually a wild spoof on Robin Hood and his Merry Men of Sherwood Forest in 12th-century England.
Instead of the boldy heroic Robin of legend, he was portrayed as a complete boob, and his men were nothing but a bunch of incompetents who only succeeded because of the even greater incompetence of the evil Prince John and his henchman - the Sheriff of Nottingham. Maid Marian was Robin's sexy but scatterbrained love interest.
Much of the humor in this fast-paced, movie-style comedy was based on historical anachronisms. In the premiere episode, the Prince lured Robin into a trap by staging an archery contest to determine who was the greatest bowman in the land. Robin came in disguise to win the title but was seized and thrown into the dungeon. His men disguised themselves as a traveling conga band and bongoed their way into the castle to rescue him.
Critics applauded this series as one of the most inventive of the season, but viewers paid it little attention and it soon disappeared.
