Bennington Beauty

August 16th is Bennington Battle Day, a historic holiday on the official calendar of Vermont. This holiday commemorates the battle in 1777 which marked the turning point in the American Revolutionary War.

To mark the occasion, we turn to Vermont's only Miss USA, the lovely Carlene King Johnson, who grew up in Rutland, not to far from Bennington.

In 1955, after winning the title of Miss New England she went to Long Beach and had a turning point of her own - she became the first young lady from New England to win the title of Miss USA.

It would be another 44 years before the northeastern USA would claim the Miss USA title again, which happened when Shawnae Jebbia of Massachusetts won in 1998.
