Miss Universe 1985

"A New Attitude"

The opening production number at the 1985 Miss Universe Pageant was “A New Attitude,” the smash hit by Patti LaBelle and popularized in the Eddie Murphy movie "Beverly Hills Cop." We are sure that by the end of evening, Deborah Carty-Deu, Miss Puerto Rico, was still humming, “I’m feeling good from my head to my shoes...I’ve got a new attitude...” And a new title...Miss Universe 1985!

In the photo, we see venerable host Bob Barker announcing Miss Spain, Teresa Sanchez, as the first runner-up and Miss Puerto Rico as the new Miss Universe. In the background are Benita Mureka, Miss Zaire and second runner-up; Silvia Martinez, Miss Venezuela and third runner-up; and Andrea Lopez, Miss Uruguay and fourth runner-up. Next to the newly announced Miss Universe is Sweden’s Yvonne Ryding, Miss Universe 1984. Next to Yvonne is Hawaii’s Kelly Hu, Miss Teen USA 1985.
