PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Miss World 1970

February 21, 1999
"More History in the Making"

Beauty School continues its salute to Black History Month with this wonderful photo of Miss World 1970, Grenada's Jennifer Hosten and her court of honor.

The 1970 Miss World Pageant made pageant history, when for the first-time ever, one of the big three global contests (Miss World, Miss Universe, and Miss International) crowned a winner and first runner-up who were black. Miss World repeated this feat in 1993, when both the winner (Lisa Hanna of Jamaica) and the first runner-up (Jacqui Mofokeng of South Africa) were black.

The 1970 Miss World Pageant also made history and headlines when it was disrupted by anti-pageant feminists with smoke bombs and flour bombs. Despite the protests, the pageant was still very popular in the UK, and was the #1 most watched TV show that year in the UK.

In the photo, we see, from left to right: Irith Lavi, Miss Israel and second runner-up; Jillian Jessup, Miss South Africa and fourth runner-up; Miss World 1970, Jennifer Hosten of Grenada; Pearl Jansen, Miss Africa South and first runner-up; and Maj Johansson, Miss Sweden and third runner-up.

At that time, South Africa sent two delegates to Miss World, one black and one white.

A special thanks to Donald West, Chair of Beauty School's Department of Miss World Studies, for sharing this photo with us.
