"The First in World History"

In our final salute to Black History Month, we honor the first black woman to win the Miss World title, Carol Joan Crawford of Jamaica, Miss World 1963.

She was named after U.S. actress Joan Crawford and corresponded with her namesake regularly.

Carol won the Miss World title wearing the same swimsuit in which she won the Miss Jamaica title - a one-piece black sealskin suit, which zipped down the front. When asked by a reporter if it was a Jamaican design, Carol said, "No, I got it in Miami."

Speaking of swimsuits, this is the time of year when U.S. magazines from SPORTS ILLUSTRATED TO VOGUE feature this summer's swimsuit fashions. Beauty School is following their lead this year and will soon feature our very own "Blast From the Past" nostalgic swimsuit edition. Watch for it!
