Breakfast in bed...what a royal treat!

Here is Miss Universe 1970, Marisol Malaret of Puerto Rico, enjoying one of the first fruits of her victory as the new Miss Universe.

Beauty queen breakfast in bed photo opportunties, especially for Miss Universe and Miss World, were a regular feature of newspapers for many years. Newspapers today will often print such photos of national winners, but "BiB" photos of international winners appear less often.

Breakfast in bed photo opportunities were often the winner's first formal press conference. Marisol conducted her first news conference after only five hours of sleep.

During her first press conference, Marisol revealed that immediately after winning the Miss Universe 1970 title, she made two calls to Puerto Rico. One call was to her aunt and brother; the other was to her boyfriend.

She told the press that her boyfriend was sad over her victory, because he realized he would not see her much during her reign. "But I'm thrilled, and I think it will be the most wonderful experience of my life," she added, referring to the glamorous, royal year ahead of her.
