"Beauty and the Beach"

Virginia's Debbie Shelton proudly displays her trophy and sash as the new Miss USA of 1970. It is not every girl who goes to the beach with a trophy!

Debbie of course would go on to place as first runner-up to Miss Universe 1970 a few months later. Interestingly enough, Debbie was no stranger to pageants. Before she won the Miss USA title, Debbie competed in the 1968 Miss World USA Pageant, where she finished as first runner-up as well.

Many years after capturing the title, Debbie returned to the Miss USA Pageant as the "color commentator." She was a breath of fresh air. Who can forget her excitement at guessing correctly the top three and then exclaiming, "I should be a bookie!"

Debbie, we'd place a bet with you any day.

Beauty School thanks our Esteemed Benefactor for sharing this photo with us.
