Irene Saez, Miss Universe 1981, was elected governor of Venezuela's Isla Margarita province on March 14, 1999. This victory came just three months after she lost a bid to become Venezuela's first woman president.
She handily defeated her main opponent for the governorship, capturing 71% of the votes.
Her campaign promises include working to improve Isla Margarita's tourist trade, attracting foreign investment, and brining the Miss Universe pageant to the island.
Beauty School is proud of Irene's remarkable achievements and hopes she fulfills all of her campaign promises!
Many Miss Universe-ologists consider Irene the single-most accomplished Miss Universe titleholder to date. In fact, she is ranked among the top five Miss Universes according to the Internet pageant contest sponsored by Henrique Fontes and his fabulous web site Henrique's Corner.
