Miss Universe 1987

A Battle of Lipstick, Powder, and Paint

In 1988, the U.S. newspaper USA TODAY traveled to Taiwan for the 1988 Miss Universe Pageant. The newspaper featured Chile's Cecilia Bolocco, Miss Universe 1987, on their front page, and the pageant was the "cover story" for the paper's LIFE section.

In the cover story, written by none other than the founder of USA TODAY, Al Neuharth, the Miss Universe Pageant is characterized as "...a battle of lipstick, powder, and paint."

Cecilia is quoted as saying, no, that is not the pageant she competed in. "They don't just pick the most beautiful. You have to present your best in every way...looks, personality, culture, and intelligence."

Well, Cecilia certainly presented her best in every way in Singapore, and she exemplifies the glamorous Universe of the 1980's.

For more 1980's "looks, personality, culture, and intelligence," be sure to check out our Dish on the 1980's. You'll even see some lipstick, powder, and paint battles going on to rival the catfights of Alexis and Krystal in DYNASTY!

Our delectable dish on the 1980's was written by Dr. Jeannie Szoradi, Ph.D in Miss Universe-ology. Dr. Szoradi, we are honored to have you on our faculty.
