"World Tour '99
World's Envy, India's Pride"

This week, Beauty School's World Tour '99 takes us to India.

"World's Envy, India's Pride" was the headline in the New Delhi daily Hindustan Times when Aishwarya Rai won the Miss World 1994 title.

In the photo above, we see Miss World 1993, Jamaica's Lisa Hanna, passing the crown to Aishwarya. On Aishwarya's left is first runner-up, Basetsane Makgalamele of South Africa.

A couple of timely tidbits about Ash (as she is affectionately called):

1. Ash celebrated her 21st birthday at the Miss World Pageant, held that year in Sun City, South Africa. Her birthday is November 1.

2. Ash is said to have lost the Miss India title to Sushmita Sen, Miss Universe 1994, in what one Indian magazine said was "a momentary flash of arrogance." When, during the final question and answer period, Ash was asked what date in history she would change if she could, she said she would change her birthday.
