This week, Beauty School's World Tour '99 takes us to Grenada, the West Indian Spice Island and home of Miss World 1970, Jennifer Hosten.
Grenada is known as the Spice Island because one of its chief crops and exports is nutmeg. In fact, Grenada is the world's leading producer of this wonderful spice, often used in the U.S. for Thanksgiving and Christmas dishes like pumpkin pie and candied yams.
Beauty School calls Jennifer the "World's First Spice Girl," because she brought home the Miss World title to Grenada, one of the smallest independent nations in the Western Hemisphere. We also call her a Spice Girl because her victory at the 1970 Miss World Pageant was unsettling and controversial.
