80 and Counting

In honor of the 80th anniversary of Miss America, we present Alabama's Yolande Betbeze, Miss America 1951. Pageant scholars know that Yolande can be credited with setting in motion the events that ultimately led to the creation of the Universe...the Miss Universe Pageant that is. When Yolande refused to wear a swimsuit at public appearances, Catalina cancelled its contract with Miss America and helped establish Miss Universe.
