PICTURE OF THE WEEK
With the selection of Miss World USA 1999 this past week, we thought we would share with you a picture of one of the most famous Miss World USA winners to date. She is Lynda Carter, Miss World USA 1972.
In the photo, we see her competing during the Miss World 1972 semifinal swimsuit competition. While she didn't win the Miss World 1972 crown, she did go on to play the lead role in the successful 1970's US TV series "Wonder Woman," based on the comic book.
While this year's Miss World USA, Natasha Allas of California, was selected without a traditional "pageant," Miss World USA 1972 was. The contest, held in Hampton, Virginia, was on September 1, 1972. Representing Arizona, Lynda, then 21, was the crowd favorite. Comedian Bob Hope was on hand and crowned Lynda as the new Miss World USA.
After winning the 1972 Miss World USA title, Lynda said to news reporters, "I only hoped to be one of the 15 semi-finalists because my parents drove all the way from Phoenix and I didn't want to disappoint them."
A special thanks to our Esteemed Benefactor for sharing this wonderful photo with us.
