AN INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATION

Miss International 1960 with her court of honor

Just a few weeks ago, September 26 to be exact, Miss International 1998 was held in Tokyo, Japan. Miss Panama, Lia Victoria Borrero, emerged victorious and became the 10th winner from Latin America.

As it happens, the very first winner of the Miss International crown was also from Latin America, and our picture of the week is an "international celebration" of that woman's victory in 1960. Her name? Stella Marquez, of Colombia, who was also a semifinalist at Miss Universe 1960.

In the picture, we see Stella and her court of honor (clockwise): Miss Iceland, Sigridur Geirsdottir (second runner-up); Miss USA, Charlene Lundberg (fourth runner-up); Miss England, Joyce Kay (third runner-up); and Miss India, Iona Pinto (first runner-up).

In the upcoming months, Beauty School will host an "International Colloquium" to document the 1960 and 1961 Miss International Pageants, held in Long Beach, California. We are indebted to the generosity and kindness of William Prendiz de Jurado for his assistance with this endeavor.
