PICTURE OF THE WEEK

September is a marvellous month for pageants, with numerous national and international contests. With this week's photo, we tip our hat to Miss Italia, whose 3 days of televised festivities each September chalk up huge ratings on Italian TV.

In the photo, we see "la piu bella d'Italia" in 1947, Lucia Bose (center). To Lucia's right is world-famous actress Gina Lollobrigida, a runner-up in the 1947 contest. Gina was a opera student when she entered Miss Italy 1947 and had already starred in Italian cinematic versions of such operas as Elisir d'Amore, Lucia di Lammermoor, and I Pagliacci.
