Elizabeth took off.
Without even thinking about it, I followed her. What had I done to make her freak out and run off like that?
I debated on whether to catch her or just follow her home. Finally I sped up.
I reached out and caught her arm. She stopped. Thank god she stopped.
"Don't touch me!" she screamed, turning on me. She ripped her arm from my grasp and backed up by a few steps.
"I'm sorry!" I said quickly. I crossed my fingers that she wouldn't bolt again.
"Elizabeth." She didn't appear to hear me. She was staring at a spot over my shoulder. So I tried again. "Elizabeth?"
Boy, she was interested in that spot. I turned my head just a little, and it hit me.
Our surroundings.
Brick walkways, majestic trees, water fountain, shaggy bushes. The park. How could I not have noticed? I turned my attention back to Elizabeth. She was shaking again. From fear or from cold, I couldn't tell which. Her eyes were glazed over. Her breath was coming in gasps. I could tell, because each one puffed in front of her face.
She was a million miles away.
"Elizabeth!" I said her name while taking a step toward her.
She seemed to snap. Her long lashes blinked rapidly over those amazing blue eyes. Her hair was coming loose from its confinement. It framed her face in wispy tendrils.
"Don't touch me," she demanded. Ice frosted over each word.
I stepped closer. "I won't."
I pulled off my coat and this time she waited around.
"Here," I said. I dropped it into her hands, careful not to get too close. Her "thank you" was muffled as she put it on.
The coat swallowed her. I shoved my hands into my pockets.
"Which way is home?" I asked when she was situated. She pointed.
"Shall we?" I started walking, not waiting for her answer. We walked along in silence until it grew unbearable.
"Do you run at night often?" I asked. She looked over and glared at me. "Hey, come on," I teased, "I let you wear my coat, the least you can-"
I cut myself short when she started removing the coat. I turned and held up my hands, palm forward.
"Hey, hey. No, no, no. Keep it."
She looked at me in silence for a moment and we resumed walking. It was eating me up inside that she wouldn't talk to me. I flashed her what I hoped came of as a charming smile.
