Kelly’s Methos and Joe walked into Kelly’s after dropping off Joe’s things at the Port Charles Hotel. They sat at a table and soon Liz appeared to take their order. “Hi Adam. Can I get anything for you and your friend?” She said. “We’ll both have coffee, we’re waiting for someone.” He said with a smile. “Liz I’d like you to meet my friend Joe Dawson.” “It’s nice to meet you Mr. Dawson.” “Oh please call me Joe, you’re gonna make me feel old.” Joe joked. “All right Joe. I’ll have those coffees for you guys right away.” Liz said and walked away. “You making friends already? That’s not like you.” Joe teased. Methos glared at him. “She was very sad and I listened to her.” “You getting soft in your old age?” “Shut up Joe.” Joe put up his hands in defense. Just then a man came to the table and sat down. He looked to be in his mid twenties, tall, with light blonde short hair. “Hey Joe, it’s great to see you.” He said smiling, then he turned to Methos. “You must be Adam Pierson, it’s nice to meet you.” Methos only nodded. He didn’t like it when mortals knew he was immortal, especially people who knew how to kill him. “So what’s up Pete? You sounded pretty urgent on the phone.” Joe said. Pete settled in to tell his story. “For the last two years I’ve been watching this particularly bad-ass immortal. He’s hasn’t done anything major since I’ve been with him, but the watcher before me asked to be transferred because he couldn’t watch the horrible things this guy did.” Pete said shaking his head. “So does this guy have a name?” Methos asked “Yeah, his name is Caesar Faison.” Pete said, showing disgust at the name. Just then Liz walked up to the table and placed the coffees on the table. “Do you guys want to order yet or do you need some more time?” Liz said, and took her notepad out of her apron. “I’ll have a cheeseburger and fries.” Pete said smiling up at Liz. “All right” Liz said writing down the order. “I’ll have the same.” Joe said. Liz nodded. “I’ll have a bowl of chili.” Methos said smiling. “Sure thing, I’ll go put those orders in.” Liz said and left. Pete leaned in, as to not be overheard. “A couple of weeks ago, Faison brings this kid into his compound outside of Paris. It was clearly a kidnapping; he came in unconscious. The kid can’t be more than 17 years old.” Joe swore under his breath. He couldn’t believe anyone could keep a kid locked up. “Faison is keeping him in a room decked out with full surveillance; he can see everything the kid does. He likes torturing the kid by showing him videotapes of his family, pictures of his girlfriend. All of his family and friends think he’s dead.” Pete finished, obviously disgusted with Faison. “Exactly how close are you to this guy?” Methos questioned. “You seem to know a lot about the situation.” “I work for him, I thought it would be the easiest way to keep track of him.” Pete said. “Dammit Pete! You know better than that! This guy’s dangerous.” Joe exclaimed. “Save the lectures for later Joe, right now I want your help in getting that kid away from this psycho.” Pete said, looking straight at Joe. “You know that’s interfering.” Joe said quietly. “Not really. It’s not like we’re stopping him from killing an immortal; we’re stopping him from killing an innocent kid. And when have you been against interfering?” Pete pushed. He knew Joe was going to help him. Joe nodded slowly; “OK I’ll help.” “Why am I here?” Methos asked. “Well, I wanted you to help. Joe said you’re pretty good with locks and we might need your help with the security system. And besides I’m not exactly great with a sword, so I thought it would be helpful if we had some immortal backup. Not to mention an early warning system, in case Faison shows up unexpectedly.” Pete said “Oh no, no way. I’m not sticking my neck out so you can go on some rescue mission.” Methos said emphatically. “Oh come on Meth… Adam. This is a 17 year old kid!” Joe said, getting angry at Methos’ constant apathy. “If you wanted a Boy Scout why didn’t you call MacLeod. He’s the hero not me!” Methos stood and walked out of Kelly’s. Pete and Joe followed. “I couldn’t reach MacLeod or I would have called him.” Joe called. Methos stopped walking and turned toward the watchers. “He’s off somewhere being alone; I can’t find him. Do you know where he is?” Methos gave him a level look. “No” he said flatly. “No meaning ‘No I don’t know’ or ‘No he doesn’t want me to tell you.’” Joe said accusingly. “No meaning ‘no’” Methos said evenly. “We need your help Adam.” Pete said almost pleadingly. “Sorry I left my cape in my other pants.” He said sarcastically and started to walk away. Pete turned to Joe, “I guess Lucky Spencer’s up a creek without a paddle.” Methos turned around and walked quickly back to Pete and Joe. “What did you say?” Methos asked urgently. “Lucky Spencer, he’s the kid Faison’s got locked up.” Pete said confused. “Damn!” Methos said under his breath. “No, no I’m not getting involved. I’m not getting involved. There’s no way.” Methos walked away, still muttering about how he wasn’t getting involved. “What was that all about?” Pete asked. “What do you know about Lucky Spencer?” Joe asked, determined to find out how Methos knew the name. “Well he’s pretty well known in this town, in fact that was his girlfriend that took our orders.” Pete answered. “Liz?” “Yeah that’s her name.” Joe looked back at the direction Methos had gone. He nodded and smiled. “He’ll come around, just give Adam some time to think it over.”

The docks Methos walked down the stairs and looked out at the water. Survival. Survival had been his motto, since… well since almost before he could remember. “Live. Grow stronger. Fight another day.” How many times had he said that? Survival meant looking after yourself first. Survival meant not getting involved with other peoples problems. He couldn’t believe he was even contemplating sticking his neck out for these people. If it was anyone else he would just walk away and not look back, he wasn’t the hero type. But now he had screwed it up by actually talking to Liz, and seeing both her and Luke walk around without their souls. He still couldn’t risk it. He would be on the first plane out of Port Charles tonight. Then his thoughts drifted to V and he smiled. Well maybe he’d leave tomorrow. A man came down the stairs behind Methos. He turned around quickly, and then was relieved to find out that it was only Luke. The unfamiliar feeling of guilt began to knot in Methos’ stomach. “Pierson right? How ya doin’?” Luke drawled as he sat down on the bench. “I’m all right. How are you Luke?” Methos asked quietly. If Luke would just say that he was ‘great’ or ‘doin’ fine’ Methos would be able to feel better about leaving, not that that ever made a difference to him. “Well I’m still here, if that says anything.” Luke said cynically. “It says that you survive.” Methos said quietly. “Usually I do. But how do I survive something like this?” Luke asked no one in particular. Luke looked up and narrowed his eyes slightly. “You know about my son don’t you?” Methos nodded. “It was in the paper.” “What? No, ‘Sorry for your loss’?” Luke said caustically. “I figured you’ve heard that enough.” Methos said shrugging his shoulders. “I have.” Luke said staring straight in front of him. “He used to be my Cowboy. The only thing I ever did right in my life. He was the smartest kid you ever did meet. And he was done in by a few lousy candles.” “It was an accident?” Methos asked. “Yep, the police report just came in. He fell asleep with some candles burning.” Luke shook his head. “He was too smart for that.” “Yes he was.” Methos sad cryptically and walked away. Luke looked after him puzzled. As soon as he was far enough away from Luke he cursed under his breath. “This is making it a little hard for me to walk away.” He said to the empty air. Then he felt the familiar tingle in the back of his mind that told him that an immortal was near and he quickly ducked out of sight. He really didn’t need a confrontation today. From his hiding spot Methos saw a man with a drawn sword looking around for the immortal he had sensed. He knew Faison was in town but he wondered if this was him, who knew how many immortals were in this town. Methos slowly crept away unseen by the other immortal.

V’s apartment
V was looking through her closet while silently berating herself for making a date with a complete stranger. But she knew she was thinking too much; she always thought too much. She knew it was a habit of hers to over analyze something until she talked herself out of it. No, not this time. She had finally admitted to herself that she would never be more than a friend to Jax, and she was ready to move on. And besides, there was something about Adam. His eyes. They had a wise look about them that instantly put her at ease, but at the same time had a mystery that excited her. She didn’t know where this was headed, but she made up her mind that she was going to find out. A loud banging on her front door shook her out of her thoughts. “V! Open up, it’s Jax!” He called urgently. V hurried to the door and pulled it open, thinking maybe that he was hurt. Jax entered as soon as the door was opened, almost knocking V to the ground in the process. “Jax is something wrong? What happened?” V said thinking that there had to be something horribly wrong for Jax to come barging into her apartment like this. A million frightening scenarios ran through her head. ‘John had had another heart attack.’ Or ‘Jerry was in an accident.’ Or ‘AJ was named CEO of ELQ’ “Is it true that you made a date with a total stranger that you met at bar?” Jax asked. By the tone of his voice you’d think she killed somebody. “Jax! You scared me! I thought something horrible had happened.” She said angrily. “Is it true?” He persisted. V let out an exasperated sigh. “Yes it’s true and you’ve been talking to Ned too much.” “V, do you know how dangerous this is? What do you know about this guy? And why didn’t you tell me?” Jax asked, still very agitated that he heard about this from Ned. V stifled a bark of laughter. “Yes I know it’s dangerous, but I’m meeting him in a public place and if you remember I used to be a cop. And his name is Adam Pierson, and he was very nice.” “So was Jack the Ripper.” Jax pointed out. V rolled her eyes and continued to answer his questions. “He’s a history professor, who likes Paris and is a good listener. He’s English, well at least that’s what his accent sounds like. And I was going to call you.” “I want to meet him.” Jax said crossing her arms in front of his chest. “Jax! You can’t screen my dates. The last time I checked you weren’t my father.” “I’m your best friend.” He protested. “Jax, you know I have very good instincts about people. And anyway between you and Ned watching over me how can anything possibly happen?” She said humorously. “I just want to meet him, and then I’ll discretely excuse myself.” Jax promised. V looked at him unconvinced, “Fine, but if you start interrogating him like some lunatic you are no longer my friend.” She threatened, trying to sound stern. “Deal, I’ll pick you up at quarter to eight.” He said and was gone as quickly as he came. V threw her hands in the air in exasperation and then returned her attention back to her closet.

The docks
Methos doubled back to the docks to make sure he wasn’t followed. When he got to the docks he was spotted… by Liz. “Adam.” She said as she walked up to him. “Hello Liz.” “Um… Adam I just wanted to thank you. You actually helped me yesterday.” She said shyly. “I’m glad. If you need to talk again, just let me know” He couldn’t believe he just said that. He was trying to avoid these people. Liz looked at him nervously, like she wanted to say something. Methos sat down on the bench. “What’s on your mind?” Liz smiled weakly and sat down next to him. For some reason this complete stranger was breaking down the wall she’d built. Luke, Laura, and Sonny were the only ones who could really reach her now. She had just come from telling Sonny that the fire wasn’t his fault. She knew he felt guilty, but it wasn’t his fault. It was her’s. “Remember yesterday, I told you that I lost the love of my life.” Methos nodded in response. “Well his name was Lucky Spencer. He died in a fire almost two weeks ago.” Liz paused trying to keep her emotions in check. “And today the police report came back. It was an accident.” “I heard. Luke Spencer said something about candles left burning.” Methos said “You talked to Luke?” Liz asked quietly. Methos nodded, “He introduced himself at the club last night, and then I saw him here just a little while ago. “Yeah, candles.” Liz looked at Methos with tears in her eyes. “I gave him those candles. And the night of the fire, I told him to light one for me.” “Oh Liz, You don’t blame yourself, do you?” Methos said shaking his head. Liz gave him a look that said ‘It IS my fault’ “Don’t blame yourself Liz. That won’t bring Lucky back.” But the voice in the back of his mind said ‘But there is something that can.’ That annoying voice was his conscience and it sounded suspiciously like MacLeod. “Lucky wouldn’t want you to be guilty. He’d want you to live your life.” Liz smiled sardonically and smirked. “You know I could see our life. I know what it would have looked like. It’s a picture in my mind. Our wedding, our kids, our house, it’s all very clear to me.” “Keep that clear in your mind. And the memories of how happy you were. It will help with the hard times.” Methos dropped his head. “The last relationship I had, I went into knowing that she only had a few months to live. And you want to know what I did?” “What?” Liz said, her heart breaking for this man who had so obviously gone through so much. “I took her around the world, I showed her everything she hadn’t seen, and I stayed with her until the end.” Methos smiled “But when I think of her I don’t think of how sad it was to lose her. I think of the joy in her face the first time she saw the sun set into the Mediterranean.” “I see what you mean. But I still can’t help but think of what would’ve happened if I hadn’t told him to light that candle, or if I would have asked him to stay in my room that night.” She finished tearfully. “What ifs will only drive you mad Liz.” Liz smiled, “I should be getting home. Thank you for listening” “Anytime, I mean it.” Liz walked away and Methos leaned back on the bench and let out a long sigh. “The fates are against me.” He said matter of factly. How was he supposed to leave when these people were unwittingly putting the biggest guilt trip ever on him? If he was honest with himself he was actually only inches from going straight to Joe and telling him that he would help save Lucky. But that nagging self-preservation instinct, which was so imbedded in his mind, was hard to overcome.

An hour later At the park
Methos had decided to take a walk. The only thing keeping him from driving straight to the airport and catching the next plane, was the thought of his dinner that night with V. All of her energy and excitement was so refreshing to him that he couldn’t help but smile at the thought of her. Just then a bright plastic ball came flying at his chest and he caught it with a surprised look on his face. He looked at the ball questioningly as if to ask it where it where it came from. “Oh I’m so sorry. That’s my daughter’s.” said the blonde that was walking up to Methos. “That’s all right. It’s nice to know I still have my reflexes.” Methos said smiling at the woman. Then he saw an adorable little girl behind her mother’s skirt. He crouched down to her level. “Is this yours?” he asked playfully. The little dark-haired girl nodded shyly. Methos handed her the ball and stood up and smiled at the mother. “I’m Adam Pierson.” He said extending his hand to her. “Laura Spencer. And this cute little girl is Lesley Lu.” She said shaking his hand. “Luke Spencer’s wife?” he asked tentatively. Laura nodded. “We’re separated but yes.” “Oh I’m sorry.” “No that’s all right.” “Your daughter is adorable.” “That she is.” Laura said smiling slightly at her daughter. “Mommy, where’s Lucky? He usually takes me to the park.” The little voice of LuLu said catching the attention of the adults and almost bringing her mother to tears. Laura kneeled down to LuLu’s level and looked at the little girl sadly. “Remember honey, I told you that Lucky’s in heaven. He’ll always be in our hearts, but he can’t come and see us.” Methos lifted his head, looked at the sky, and silently asked, ‘You’re against me aren’t you?’ The little girl nodded and turned silent. Laura stood. “I’m sorry about that.” “No that’s all right. I heard about Lucky I’m sorry.” Laura looked at him confused. “I’m staying at Kelly’s for a few days and actually I’ve been talking to Liz.” Methos explained. “How is she?” Laura asked clearly worried. “She’s surviving.” Methos paused and then put a hand on Laura’s shoulder. “I’m quite sure things will be better soon.” Laura looked at him puzzled and strangely comforted by his words. “Well Lesley Lu, don’t lose that ball again.” Methos said smiling. “I’m sure I’ll see you again Laura, good-day.” Laura smiled and nodded. Methos walked away. He was a ways away from Laura when he stopped and looked up at the sky again. “You win all right.” He said and then was off to see Joe.

7:45 PM
Methos walked into the Port Charles Hotel. He was ready for his date with V, but he needed to talk to Joe first. He was about to go to the elevator when he saw Pete and Joe sitting in the bar. Methos walked up to them and leaned with his back to the bar, elbows resting on the bar. He turned his head to Joe with a very exasperated look on his face. “Fine, I’ll help.” He said through gritted teeth. He hated the triumphant, smug look on Joe’s face. “Are you sure? We wouldn’t want to push you into anything.” Joe said in mock concern. Methos gave him a glare that said ‘Don’t push it’ Joe smirked, “So what changed your mind?” Methos groaned, “First Luke Spencer tells me how his ‘Cowboy’ was too smart to leave candles burning. Then Liz tells me that the fire was her fault because she gave Lucky the candles. And guess who I ran into at the park?” Joe looked thoroughly amused. “No who?” “Laura Spencer and the adorable Lesley Lu.” Methos shook his head in exasperation. “Someone up there must want me to help young Mr. Spencer, because I just received the guilt trip of my life!” There were only certain people Methos would stick his neck out for and had in the past. Duncan, Amanda, and Joe, if forced. He kept this list short for a reason. It wasn’t really helping someone else that bothered him, if there weren’t an immortal involved he definitely wouldn’t be as reluctant. “Anyway. Pete, is this Faison character in town?” Methos asked remembering the immortal he had seen earlier that day. “Yeah he is why?” “Medium height, long greasy hair, looks like he should be under a bridge?” Methos described. Pete nodded his head, “Yep that’s him.” “Well I saw him. Thankfully he didn’t see me.” Methos paused. “I’m going to need the schematics for his security system. And also I want to bring Luke Spencer into this. I did some research on him this afternoon and I think he would be helpful.” “You want to do what?” Joe asked surprised. “And what exactly do you think we should tell him? ‘Your son was kidnapped by this guy who can live forever and he can only die if you cut off his head.’” Methos had a disgusted look on his face. “Well don’t tell him the truth.” “And what would you have me tell him?” Joe said exasperated. “You’re creative, I’m sure you can come up with something.” Methos said with a straight face. Joe rolled his eyes. Then Methos saw V and tall blond man approaching. “We’ll have to continue this later. I have plans.” Methos stood up and straightened his sports coat. “You have a date?” Joe asked teasingly. But before Methos could come up with a fitting comeback V was in front of him. “You look beautiful.” Methos said taking her hand and kissing it. V blushed and said quietly, “Thank you.” “V these are former colleagues of mine, Joe Dawson and Pete Walker. This is the lovely V Ardanowski.” Methos said making introductions. “And this is my crazy overprotective friend, Jasper Jacks.” V said clearly irritated by Jax’s insistence on being there. “Jax this is Adam Pierson.” Jax stepped forward, “It’s nice to meet you. V said you are a history professor. What do you specialize in?” “Actually right now I’m just a touring lecturer. I’m doing a series on ancient Greek culture, but I don’t really have a specialty. I’m more of a generalist.” Methos could hear Joe smirk behind him. “So you’re just passing through Port Charles?” Jax asked almost hopefully. “Well, I was, but now it appears I have more business here than I thought.” Methos said with an accusatory glance at Joe. “How long will you be here?” Jax asked wasting no politeness on him. Methos was about respond with something very witty when V interrupted him. “Are you done yet?” V asked shortly, glaring at Jax Jax gave a long sigh. “Yes. Call me if you need me.” Jax gave Methos a cold glare and left. Methos just smiled, thoroughly amused and the situation. “I’m sorry about that. He insisted that he be allowed to meet you.” V said getting very animated. “He burst into my apartment this afternoon, very angry that I had agreed to go on a date with a stranger that I had met at a bar. Add that he heard about it from Ned and not from me. Let me tell you I had one furious best friend on my hands. The only way I could get him to shut up and get out was to let him meet you. I’m so sorry.” Methos smiled. He liked the way her little speech was like a circle. It ended and started in the same place. “So V, that is a very interesting name. Does the V stand for anything?” Joe said. He found the fact that Methos had picked up this woman at a bar very amusing. “Um… Well… That’s a…. No.” She stammered. “OK. Well how did you two kids meet?” Joe teased. “She spilled a drink on me.” Methos said shortly and then turned to V. “Why don’t we get away from my meddling friend and go eat.” “That sounds good” V said nervously. Soon they were seated and their drink orders had been taken. “Why didn’t you ever ask me about my name? Most people do.” V asked. Methos thought for a moment. “Well, I’ve been told I’m not like most people. And well I just figured you didn’t want anybody to know, and if you wanted me to know you’d tell me.” “You’re right. You’re not like other people.” V said quietly. “So, it looks like Jax cares about you.” Methos prodded. V gave an exasperated sigh, “He’s my best friend and I guess he feels protective. Ned would be just as bad if his girlfriend Alexis didn’t save me most of the time.” They both laughed. V looked at Methos thoughtfully. “Do you have a lot of friends or just a few close ones?” “A few close ones.” Methos said quietly, for a moment thinking of the friends of the past. The ones he no longer had. “So tell me about your friends.” “Why do you want to know about my friends?” He asked smiling. “You can tell a lot about a person by the type of friends they have.” “I hope not.” Methos said getting a laugh out of V. “All right, well you met Joe. He owns a blues bar in the northwest and I think he still has one in Paris too. He plays blues guitar. He’s pretty good too.” Methos smiled, “He’s a good guy. He can be a pain in the a**, but I’d probably do just about anything for the old geezer.” “He plays music?” V asked with that glint in her eye that she got whenever she was in ‘music mode’ Methos noticed the wheels turning in her head. “Now wait a minute. He doesn’t record, he just plays as a hobby.” V gave a mischievous smile, “That’s what Ned said.” “You can try.” Methos said shaking his head. “He’s stubborn and I’m pretty sure Joe’s a lot more set in his ways then Ned is.” “Well I can be stubborn too, at least that’s what Ned tells me everyday. I’ll get in touch with him tomorrow.” “Good luck.” “Well, sorry I interrupted. Go on, your friends?” V said motioning for him to continue. “Oh yes, friends.” Methos was almost hoping she had forgotten about that. “Well, there’s Duncan MacLeod, most of his friends call him Mac.” Methos paused; he suddenly found it hard to describe his relationship with Mac. “He’s annoying, infuriating, and frustrating. He’s a typical ‘Boy Scout’, honor and pride and all that. He’s a truly maddening Scott.” Methos’ voiced softened and he looked thoughtful. “But I honestly don’t where I’d be without him.” Methos shook himself out of his thoughts and lightened his attitude. “And then there’s Amanda. She’s one of my oldest friends. She goes after everything with her whole heart and she’s always there for a friend. She’s gotten me into more trouble and more tight spots than any other person I’ve ever known.” Methos said shaking his head at the funny and frustrating memories. “But she’s always been there to get me out of a jam, especially if she’s the one that got me there in the first place.” “They sound like great friends.” V said smiling. “I’ve told you about my friends, now it’s your turn.” Methos said, his eyes teasing. V laughed and all throughout dinner she told him all about how she met Jax, the adventure at Tiger Key, the whole Jimmy/Mac fiasco, Brenda’s death, Monte Carlo, and finally, rescuing Jax and Alexis from the Sahara. After dinner Methos gave her a ride back to the ‘Outback’. “I had a really nice time Adam.” V said coming to a stop and the entrance and turning to him “So did I, V.” Methos said, smiling at her. “I’d like to do it again, if possible.” V smiled shyly, “I’d love to. How about tomorrow?” It was then that he remembered that he had to help Lucky. “Actually I’ll most likely be gone for a few days. But I’ll be back.” V looked disappointed. “Oh” He was struck with the strong urge to see her again, and soon. Methos’ eyes lit up as an idea came to him. “Come with me. I’m going to Paris.” V looked at him like he was crazy. “I can’t go with you to Paris. I have work and I barely know you!” She looked flustered and confused and nervous all of a sudden; Methos couldn’t help but think she looked beautiful. He couldn’t explain exactly why, but he felt that he needed to take her with him, and he rarely denied his instincts. So he decided to use another approach. “I’ll need your help V. You used to be a cop and I know you’re good under pressure…” “Why would you need a cop?” V asked skeptically. “Well I can’t give you all the details right now, but just come to ‘Luke’s’ tomorrow and you can decide if you want to help.” Methos said “Help with what?” V demanded. Methos looked hesitant. “Well, it’s a rescue mission of sorts. I can’t really tell you anymore than that. Just meet me at ‘Luke’s’ tomorrow. I’ll be there around noon, in Luke’s office.” “Luke’s office?” She said, completely confused. Methos put his hands on her shoulders and looked into her eyes, with a look that could be called pleading. “Please just say you’ll meet me.” V looked indecisive. “All right, I’ll be there.” Methos hugged her tightly. “Thank you V.” He pulled away and gave her a light kiss on her cheek, said goodnight, and walked away leaving a very dazed and confused V. “Why in the world did I just do that?” She asked herself. She shook her head and walked inside the restaurant and up to her apartment.
Methos got in his car and started driving back to ‘Kelly’s’. He took out his cell phone and dialed Joe’s room at the PC Hotel. “Dawson” Joe answered shortly. “Joe, why don’t you meet me at ‘Luke’s’ at noon so we can talk to him about his son.” Methos suggested. “I still haven’t figured out what we’re going to tell him. I don’t think it’s a good idea to bring him in on this.” “I think we’ll need him and also I think I know what we can tell him. Oh and I’m bringing in an ex-cop that I met here in Port Charles.” He informed Joe flippantly. Methos also pulled the phone away from his ear, anticipating Joe’s reaction. “YOU’RE WHAT!?” Methos smiled and continued his conversation. “Joe, just meet me at ‘Luke’s’ and have your friend Pete bring the schematics for that security system.” And with that he hung up.
