Dragon Ball manga personae list, and background data, Part 3.

Note: This guide will cover volumes 21 through 30. Later characters
will be included in the fourth part of this guide.

[fa:vxxx -- First Appears in Volume xxx.]
[oa:vxxx -- Only appearance is in Volume xxx.]
[la:vxxx -- Last Appears in Volume xxx. Normally, good guys continue
to appear throughout the series, and minor bad guys don't
last for more than one volume. The exceptions will get
entry for la:vxxx. However, the major bad guy exception
is Tao-pie Pie, who has shown up in the TV series as
recently as the Winter of 1993.]

Character List:
Kewie: Local lizard-fish alien leader on Planet #79 [oa:v21]
Freeza: Lizard-like alien. VERY strong, and uses very polite
language. First appears while riding a hover-chair. Wants the
Dragon Balls to wish for immortality. [fa:v21] [la:v29]
Dodoria: Freeza's fat, ugly assistant. Very strong, but rather dumb.
         [fa:v21] [la:v22]
Zarbon: Freeza's beautiful alien co-assistant. Stronger than
Dodoria. Also faster, and more vain. [fa:v21] [la:v23]
Dende: The young Namek-jin that Gohan saves from Freeza. [fa:v22]
Saichourou: The ultimate village elder, a massive old Namek-jin who's
the one that had created the orginal Namek Dragon Balls. When
he dies, the Namek Balls cease to function. [fa:v22] [la:v28]
   Nail: Saichourou's aide and bodyguard. [fa:v22] [la:v27]
Cargo: The Namek kid that lived in Dende's village. His death
triggers Gohan into saving Dende. [oa:v22]
The Ginyuu team: A group of silly super mercenaries hired by Freeza
to help get the Namek Dragon Balls. Designed as a parody of the
Japanese 5-man rubber-suit team TV shows. First mentioned in book
         22. The names are probably a scrambling of Cream, Butter, Juice,
Gourd, and Gyuu (beef). [fa:v23] [la:v25]
         Rikuum: The big, effeminate muscleman
         Baata: The big, masculate musclelizard
Jiisu: The smaller pretty boy, throws a "crusher ball"
Gurudo: The little four-eyes that can control time
Ginyuu: Group leader, can switch bodies
Second-stage Freeza: Freeza is a changling, having several forms that
mask the power of the suceeding form. This form is sort of a
         big horned demon. [oa:v25]
Third-stage Freeza: An extension of the Second-stage Freeza: more
powerful, but looks like a parody of the creature from _Alien._
Fourth-Stage Freeza: The ultimate form, this is what Freeza
originally looked like. It's been a long time since he's had
         this shape. [fa:v26] [la:v28]
Bardock: The Saiya-jin that fought Freeza in the final battle on
planet Vejita. Son Gokuu's (and Kakarot's) father. Killed
         by Freeza. [oa:v26]
Super Saiya-jin Gokuu: The hair stands up and turns gold, there's a
big aura of yellow energy, and the power is incredible. He
attains this stage after watching Freeza explode Kuririn. [fa:v27]
Super Saiya-jin Vejiita: Stronger than Gokuu, attained by training at
         450 g for 3 years. [fa:v29]
Cyborg Freeza: He'd been rescued by his father, partially mechanized,
and made much stronger and faster than before. [oa:v28]
Papa: AKA Great King Cold. Freeza's father. A huge horned demon,
who has saved Freeza and turned him into a cyborg. [oa:v28]
Trunks: The golden-haired boy from the future. Carrying a sword, and
wearing a Capsule Corp. jacket, he destroys Freeza and Cold, and
warns the heroes of the threat that awaits them in 3 years. Is
the son of Buruma and Vejita. [fa:v28]
#19: Dr. Gero's android. Comes from the alternate future. Fat, with
a pointy head, looks vaguely Chinese. Steals people's energy
through the contacts in his hands. [fa:v28] [la:v29]
#20: AKA -- Dr. Gero. Works for Red Ribbon. Came back in time with
#19 to destroy the planet. Gets his energy the same way #19
does. Old, mean-looking, with very long silver hair. [fa:v28]
         [la:v30]
#17: The young male android created by Dr. Gero. In Trunk's
future, #17 and 18 both terrorize Earth, and destroy everyone
before travelling to the past to kill Vejiita and the rest of
the heroes. Wears a Red Ribbon jersey, torn jeans, and a
yellow scarf. Has earrings and shoulder-length black hair.
VERY strong. Is consumed by Cell in a later volume. [fa:v29]
         [la:31]
#18: Female android companion to #17. Is also consumed by Cell,
but later gets spit back out, and becomes slightly more normal.
Settles down with Kuririn and has his baby. [fa:v29]
#16: The big, good-looking hulk with red eyes. Originally fights
alongside #17 and #18. Gets repaired by Buruma and becomes a
good guy. Gentle by nature, he dies in the fight against Cell.
         [fa:v30]
Cell: The biological weapon creation made by Dr. Gero. Stole Trunks'
time machine to arrive in the past. Contains some of the cell
samples from most of the heroes. Just needs to consume #17 and
         #18 to become complete. [fa:v30]
First-Stage: He looks like a cross between a lizard, a scorpion,
                      and a human.

Fighting styles:
Ki En Zan: Kuririn's cutting energy ball, developed to combat Nappa and
       Vejiita.
Rikuum Eraser Gun: A mouth blast more powerful than most large bombs.
Crusher Ball: Jiisu's super powerful energy sphere.
Shunkan-idou: The teleport ability that Gokuu learns on Yardrat. But,
he can only jump to a place where someone he knows is located
(he has to feel that person's energy to teleport to that place.)

Other notes:
Chikyuu: Japanese for The Earth. More or less what everyone uses to
refer to the main planet, and its inhabitants. Implies that the
story in the manga takes place on Earth.
Jin: The Japanese word for "person". So, Saiya-jin means a person
       from the planet Saiya.
Buruma's parents: They're never given any names beyond "Buruma's
       mother" and "Buruma's father."
Namek-jin: The Namek are like certain insects, in that their
functions in society are dictated by the conditions of their
birth. Dende is a healer, Piccolo and Nail are fighters.
Dende can't fight, and Piccolo and Nail can't heal.
Vejiita: His character design has changed radically since his first
appearance in book 17. In the one year that has passed,
he's aged 5 to 6 years, at least. Sentouminzoku Saiya-jin
is what he calls himself when that he becomes a little stronger
than when he was on Earth.
The kanji on Gokuu's gi as of vol. 23 reads "Go" -- first kanji for
       "Gokuu."
Henshin -- "Body Changing." This is a standard word used to describe
someone that goes from one form to another. Ginyuu does this with
Gokuu, using the keyword -- "Change."
"Takkarato Popporunga Pupirittoparo." Phrase used to summon the
       Namekian Shenlon.
Freeza destroyed the planet Vejiita 30 years ago, leaving Nappa,
Radits, and Vejiita as the last of the race of Saiya-jin.
The future: This is a malleable thing, that can be altered by
changing events in the past, which will then create an alternate
timeline. Trunk's future still exists, but it's not the one
that the heroes eventually grow into.
Yardrat: The planet that Gokuu stumbles across after leaving Namek.
Here, he learns a new technique, and picks up the heart disease
       that Trunks warns him about.

                                                 -- Curtis H. Hoffmann
                                                    Sept. 24, 1993
