Dragon Ball manga personae list, and background data.

Note: This guide covers volumes 36 to 39. A later release of this guide
will cover the subsequent volumes as they are published.

[fa:vxxx -- First Appears in Volume xxx.]
[oa:vxxx -- Only appearance is in Volume xxx.]
[la:vxxx -- Last Appears in Volume xxx. Normally, good guys continue
to appear throughout the series, and minor bad guys don't
last for more than one volume. The exceptions will get
an entry for la:vxxx. However, the major bad guy exception
is Tao-pie pie, who has shown up in the TV series as
recently as the Winter of 1993.]

Character List:
   ------------- Recaps and updates: Volume 36 ---------------
Mister Satan: Professional wrestler, and world figure. Now, the
savior of Satan City and "winner" of the "Cell Game.".
Gohan: He's now 16, and has been studying under Chi Chi's tutilage.
He starts out the book by going to his new school in Satan City.
The Golden-Haired Warrior: Gohan's first alter ego. While is strong
enough to defeat Cell, and normal criminals are no problem for
him, Gohan chooses to fight crime in Saiya-jin form as a kind of
disguise. It's not a very good disguise, so he instead
       becomes...
The Great Saiya-man: Gohan's alter-ego. He wants to protect his
identity at school, so he gets a costume from Buruma, and spends
lots of time in front of the mirror, practicing his poses.
Trunks: Son of Buruma and Vejiita. Age 8. Slightly faster and more
powerful than Goten, and already a Super Saiya-jin.
Kuririn: Since he stopped fighting, he's let his hair grow out, and
has shacked up with #18 on Kame-sennin's island. Has fathered
       a daughter with #18.
#18: She is not fully machine, rather she is a cyborg, with enough
human parts to give birth to "the Kid." Her daughter has not
yet been referred to by name.
Dende: He's aged, and grown up a lot in the last few years. Is still
the current Kami-sama, but has trouble remembering that people
are supposed to treat him with deference.
Vejiita: Is living in the Capsule Corp. HQ, with Buruma. Still
training like a maniac, with the intent to defeat Gohan and
Gokuu. Still likes to consider himself a force of evil.
Yamcha: Has moved out of Capsule Corp., and is living in some unnamed
location. Has never managed to sleep with Buruma.
Tenshinhan and Chao-zu: Shown in chapter 474 to still be out in the
       mountains together, training.
   Kame-sennin: Unchanged.
   Karin-sennin: Unchanged.
Yajirobe: Unchanged, except for a black moustache. Is living
       in Karin Tower.
Uranai Baba, Kame-sennin's older sister, appears long enough to grant
Gokuu one day on Earth to fight in the next Tenkai-ichi Budoukai.
       Unchanged.

   New characters:
Beederu: Satan's daughter. Very strong, and leader of the city's
amature law enforcement service. Is in Gohan's class in school, and
coerces Gohan into entering the next Tenkai-ichi Budoukai with her.
       [fa:v36]
Shapner: The long blond-haired baseball player in Gohan's class.
       [fa:v36]
Ireeza: The short blond-haired girl who develops a lust for Gohan.
       [fa:v36]
Goten: Gohan's younger brother. Is already faster and more powerful
than Gokuu or Gohan had been at that age. Looks like Gokuu used
to. Age 7. Became a Super Saiya-jin while practicing fighting
techniques with Chi-Chi. (She's shocked that Goten is already a
       "juvenile delinquent".) [fa:v36]
Idarsa: The first boy that faces Trunks in the Budoukai. He loses.
       [fa:v36]
Ikousa: Idarsa's brother. Loses to Goten. [fa:v37]
Kaiou-shin: Kaiou God. Is using Gohan as bait to track down Magical
Being Buu. Was the only Kaiou-shin to survive the original
combat that resulted in Buu being sealed within It's shell. Appears
at the Budoukai in the guise of a young punk with a mohawk. [fa:v37]
Kibit: Kaiou-shin's big, muscular assistant. Is a healer in the same
       vein as Dende. [fa:v37]
Yamuu: Minion possessed by Babi-di, set to find someone with enough
energy, and then is to steal that energy. [fa:v37] [la:v38]
   Supopo-bitchi: Yamuu's overly-muscled partner. Had been a long-
haired strongman who had competed in a previous Budoukai. [fa:v37]
       [la:v38]
Mighty Mask: Some guy that made it into the final rounds. Is
cold-cocked by Trunks. Then, Trunks and Goten use the disguise
to enter the adult's portion of the Tenkai-ichi Budoukai. [fa:v37]
Jewel: Mr. Satan's protogee. In the final rounds of the TIB. [fa:v37]
       [la:v38]
Killer: Black fighter, in the final rounds of the TIB. [fa:v37] [la:v38]
Babi-di: The Black World's strongest mage. Looks thin, old, and
wrinkled, but has frightening magic powers. Son of the wizard
who created Buu several hundred years ago. His only real hold
over Buu is that fact that he knows the spell that can seal up Buu
       again. [fa:v38] [la:v40]
Darbura: The tall, demonic looking fighter working for Babi Dee. Buu
turns him into a cookie and eats him. [fa:v38] [la:v39]
   Puipui: Babi Dee's lizard-looking magic user. [oa:v38]
Yakon: A blobby monster, one of Babi Dee's minions. [oa:v38]
Buu: A great, magical creature that Babi Dee wants to reactivate.
He needs lots of combat energy (with a twist of evil) to wake up.
Kaiou-shin is terrified of him, and with Kibit, has been trying
to locate Buu for a very long time. Buu is first shown in a
large nutshell, located in the bottom level of a rocket that's
buried out in the countryside. When released, Buu resembles the
Marshmellow Man from the Ghost Busters movie. Buu is like a
spoiled baby, with awesome magical powers. His favorite pastime
is to turn his victims into snack foods, and then eat them.
(AKA: Majin Buu, or Magical Creature Buu.) [fa:v39]
Bibi-di: Babi-di's father. He'd originally created Buu, and it
took all of the exisiting Kaiou-shin's to defeat Buu in the war
300+ years ago time. Just a name, Bibi-di died in the war, and
is never shown in the flesh.
Old Kaiou-shin: A faded Kaiou-shin, whose name is never given. He had
been trapped in the Zet Sword by some other creature, for
15 generations. Claims to have a talent that will help
Gohan defeat Buu. Is very weak, and pitiful. [fa:v40]
Later on, Gokuu calls him Dai Kaiou-shin (or "Great Kaiou-shin").
Gotenks: The character that results when Goten and Trunks complete
their Fusion. Has an outfit similar to Buu's, and while
initially cool-looking, is still no match for the monster. [fa:v40]
Majin Buu: This is what everyone was really afraid of. Buu can do a
power upgrade on Itself. The first Buu we see is "Stupid Buu",
a childish, naive version. Later, "Stupid Buu" creates "Evil
Buu", which is a thin, starved, nasty version of Itself. Soon
after, "Evil Buu" eats "Stupid Buu" to become "New Buu" (AKA:
Majin Buu. That is, there is no real name change.) "New Buu" is
lean and mean, loves killing, but is still very uneducated. More
powerful than Cell, but with no purpose at all, "New Buu" is the
       ultimate mindless destruction. [fa: v40]
   SSJ-3 Gotenks: In Fusion form, Gotenks can switch to Super Saiya-jin 3;
his hair grows down to his butt, his face becomes leaner, and his
eyebrow ridges stand out more. In terms of power, he completely
dwarfs Piccolo, and easily rivals Gokuu's SSJ-3 level. Gokuu
comments that Gotenks has achieved SSJ-3 long, long before he ever
could, and much more easily. [fa:v41]

Other notes:
At least 7 years have passed since the ending of volume 35. The
world has embraced Mister Satan as its saviour.
Satan City is the main location of the first part of
                    the new story.
Orange Star High School: Gohan's new school.
   Satan City: Where Beederu lives.
Randoseru Town: Nearby town to Satan City.
439 East: The sector 1000 km from Satan City, where Gohan lives.
Damage Energy: This is the type of energy that comes from people
fighting. It's what Babi-di needs to help
                   resurrect Buu.

Volume 38
Various notes:
Budoukai Adult Battle Royale rounds: In the Battle Royale finale,
Mighty Mask (Goten and Trunks knocked out the real Mighty Mask
and put on his costume) knock out Killer, and #18 defeats Jewel.
Mighty Mask is revealed to be two kids, and is disqualified. #18
makes a deal with Satan, and throws herself out of the ring. The
       winner: Mr. Satan.

Babi-di's ship: Not only is the ship a form of transportation, a safe
place to keep Buu, and the villians' current hideout. It's also
a combat training site. The ship is 5 stories tall, and each
story has its own champion. Pui Pui is the main Level 1 fighter,
and Yakon is the main Level 2 fighter. We never get to see the
others, as Darbura steps in for Level 3, and then Vejiita gets
around to destroying the entire ship.

Combat techniques:

   Satsujin Punch -- Ikousa's "Assassin's/Kill Person" punch.
Totsugeki -- Goten's diving bombing attack.
Rolling Attack -- Mr. Satan's rolling attack.
   Satan Punch!!! -- What else?
Satan Miracle Special Ultra Super Megaton Punch -- Mr. Satan's best
punch. Used on #18, it has no effect. Later on,
when asked to repeat the full name for the Press,
                     Satan has forgotten it.

Volume 39:
Various notes:
Fusion: A process that allows two people to become one. It's not
a permanent condition. It requires that the two be of near-equal
power, and that they both have a certain amount of prepping.
Includes having to go through a stupid-looking set of dance steps.
Metamoru: A planet whose people have learned to do the "fusion" trick.
One of the limits placed on the Dragon Balls is that people dead for
more than one year can not be wished back to life. Therefore, if
all of the wishes are used up now, anyone killed within the last few
days will stay permanently dead. This is why it's such a major
thing when Gokuu turned down the resurrection at the end of the
Cell Game -- over one year has passed, and he can not be wished
back to life. However, it is possible to tell Shenlon that you don't
have any more wishes. If only one wish is fulfilled, the Balls can
be used again in 4 months. For two wishes, you have to wait 8 months,
and for all 3 wishes, the Balls can't be used again for 1 full year.

Volume 40:
New weapons:
Zet Sword: A very heavy sword that had been used by the Kaiou-shins a
long time ago to fight Buu. It starts out embedded in the rock
of a butte on the Kaiou-shin planet. However, it is really the
prison for an old Kaiou-shin. When the sword breaks, the prisoner
is released. He claims to have the ability to make Gohan stronger.

New attacks:
Ame-tama ni natchae: Become candy balls.
??? ni natchae: What Buu says to turn victims into the desired
                        sweets.
Super Saiya-jin 1: The new name for what has always been called
       "Super Saiya-jin."
Super Saiya-jin 2: The new name for Chou Super Saiya-jin, or the
       level beyond SSJ.
Super Saiya-jin 3: Gokuu's name for "beyond the beyond the Super
Saiya-jin." By powering up well past the "Saiya-jin level,"
Gokuu's face becomes leaner, his hair grows down to his waist
and he gets very strong. But, he's still about even with
Vejiita (when Vejiita was controlled by Babi-di,) and it's still
       not enough to defeat Buu.

Places:
   Kaiou-shin-kai: Kaiou-shin's home planet.

Volume 41:

New attacks:
Dynamite Kick -- These are all standards punches and
Rolling Thunder Punch kicks, with new names devised by
   Inoshishi (wild boar) Attack Gotenks
   Power Tackle
   Miracle Super Punch
   Great Kick Special
   Magnum Thunder
   Ultra Miracle Parfait
   Hyper Plasma Short Cake
Galactica Donut -- Gotenks' encircling, crushing energy ring.
Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack - Gotenks spits out a ghost of himself.
The ghosts explode on impact, which can
then do damage and drain you of energy.
Renzoku Super Donuts -- (Continuous Super Donuts.) This is like
                                 Galactica Donut, with four contracting
energy rings being shot out, instead of
                                 just one.

Comments:
Kami-sama's Palace is located directly above Karin Tower (where
Karin-sennin and the Senzu Seeds are.) For Gokuu to reach
Kami-sama's for the very first time, the boy had to use his
expanding staff to connect the top of Karin Tower to the
bottom of Kami-sama's floating Palace. At the time, the staff
had a limited reach of about 40 meters, and had to be left in
place afterwards. Now, however, the staff is missing, and
Karin Tower is not visible while Buu destroys the Palace.
Continuity error? Or was the staff gifted to someone else, and
the Palace allowed to drift away from the Tower?

Volume 42

New Characters:
Vejit: Gokuu and Vejiita finally merge using Dai Kaiou-shin's
earrings. Vejit looks like Gokuu, with black hair standing in
Super Saiya-jin form, and a cross between Gokuu's and
Vejiita's fighting uniforms. The result is a street boxer with
              dangly earrings.
The True Buu: A long time ago, Buu had absorbed two of the Kaiou-shins,
which had resulted in It's becoming the Fat Buu that was
trapped in the Ball and released by Babi-di. Now, with the
cysts of Fat Buu, Piccolo, Gohan, Goten, and Trunks removed
from It, the True Buu looks like a sullen, evil little Buu
child (about 12 years old.) It is completely ruthless, and
easily destroys Earth with a house-sized energy ball.

Comments:
The Dragon Ball manga ends with volume 42. After the battle with Buu, 10
more years pass. All of the characters have grown up and separated to live
their own lives. However, they are reunited because Gokuu wants to fight a
REALLY STRONG OPPONENT in the Tenkai-ichi Budoukai to be held in a few days.
(This Budoukai is the hook for wrapping up a bunch of loose ends.)

In the final Tenkai-ichi Budoukai, 10 years after the battle with Buu:

Mou Kekko: ("I'm Fine, Thanks") A huge Mongolian. [oa:v42]
Uubu: A little black-skinned country boy, with a shaggy mohawk. Looks
very nervous, but determined. Is actually the reincarnation
              of evil Majin Buu. [oa:v42]
Captain Chicken: A Professional wrestler in a chicken suit. [oa:v42]
Otoko Sukii: ("I like men") A Big butch guy in a police cap and tights.
              [oa:v42]
Nok: A blond longhair with a bandana and street clothes. [oa:v42]
Kiraano: A blond pretty boy teenager, who Vejiita thinks has the best
chance of being the foe they're looking for. [oa:v42]

The current characters, as they appear at the end of the series:

   Gokuu: No change.
Chi Chi: Chi Chi has changed a lot. Face is more enlongated, with
higher eyebrows, and long black hair pulled back in kind of an
            American Indian squaw look.
Goten: A teenaged version of Gokuu. Wild black hair, and rather lazy.

Mr. Satan: Satan has suffered from the passage of time more than anyone
else. He's probably in his late 40's, early 50's. Bald on top,
with a heavy black fringe around the sides. He's also mellowed
            a bit.
Buu: Has moved in with Satan, and is no longer called Majin Buu.
Now, It is known as Mister Buu. No visible change.
Bee: ("Beh"). The dog that Buu befriended. Bee is a big, old dog now.
Kind of like an aging golden retriever.

Gohan: The young Clark Kent; has wide-rimmed glasses and nerdy clothes.
            Has become a scholar.
Beederu: (There's no proof in the manga that she's married Gohan,
but a link chart that shows up elsewhere does state that she
and Gohan did marry, eventually.) Kind of a 1930's flapper,
with a pageboy haircut and a tight suit dress.
            AKA: Videl (Devil).
Pan: (Bread.) Gohan and Beederu's young daughter. Age 4.
Looks much like Beederu used to. Very big, cute eyes.
Vejiita: No physical change. Mellowed out a lot, though.
Buruma: Looks like a 40-year old matron. She's become exactly the kind
of pushy old broad that she'd always hated. AKA: Bulma.
Trunks: Looks just like the version of him from the future, back with
the final defeat of Freeza. Doesn't have a sword, though.
Bura: (Bra.) Daughter of Buruma and Vejiita. Looks like Buruma used
to, including the hair pulled up at the back of her head. About
            Pan's age.

#18: The most wickedly attractive woman in the series. This android
has matured a lot, and looks to be mid-30, with short blond hair
combed up and over one eye.
Kuririn: (There's a reason why the ex-monk looks so happy.) Kuririn is
now a middle-aged runt, with a full head of hair streaked with
grey. (Could easily be middle manager in some car parts dealer.)
Marron: Kuririn and #18's daughter finally has a name in the manga
(Chestnut. Maron pie is popular in fastfood restaurants.)
Outside of aging a bit, Marron hasn't changed much. Still has
her hair in two ponytails on the sides of her head.

Yamcha: With his long hair pulled back in a ponytail, and the scar on
his cheek, Yamcha could either pass as a biker, or a trendy
            fiction writer.
Kamesennin: Traded his sunglasses in for a pair from the Back to the
            Future movie. Otherwise unchanged.
Dende: A young adult Namek. More mature-looking, but you know the
problem. These guys all look the same to me.
Piccolo: No change. Still wears the same outfit.

Yajirobee: Shaggier and fatter than ever; still living with Karin-sama.
   Karin-sama: No change.
Tenshinhan: has thicker eyebrows, but basically unchanged.
Chao-zu: Still living and training with Tenshinhan. Basically unchanged.
