For no real good reason Ted brings back "Bad Seed" Vanessa, who
again takes Vicki's place, locks Vicki in her/its cabinet and joins the family to
Hollywood, where Ted must repair a movie's robot while Vanessa mugs into a screen
test on the sly.
The series finale, with an apt display of a skeleton at the close. Throwing in
Vanessa was largely a thank-you tidbit for her fans, and for all the
unanticipated sci-fi and collegian ones who gave the pioneering show a very good
run in the face of incredible odds and competition. What hurts is it didn't have
to end so abruptly (see "Series Post
Mortem"). Had the Too Good To Be True episode closed the
previous season, we would've been enjoying a "new" Vicki: a cross
between a mollified Vanessa and a perky Vicki in a much more mature, revamped
series format. Had TGTBT's series concept itself launched this season, we'd be at
the close of a year of Vanessa's antics with the elder Lawsons with a new crew of
producers and writers altogether. Vanessa's dominating the very last Small
Wonder episode (last but two in production sequence) was more like a cruel
tease of what could've been.
Notable is Danny Wells' accurate portrayal of series creator Howard
Leeds (H.L.).
