Theme Songs

One of the most derided aspects of Small Wonder was its Tra-la-la theme song, especially season one's, which most all fans felt was too cloying, "sissy," puerile and "dopesy-dainty." Giving the executive producer his due, I will say Leeds was no songwriter! Still, it was assumed at the pilot that only kids would be watching. There was a chance for an overhaul for season two when the production realized we had a far greater and older audience than anticipated and a nice jazzier new song was contracted for (which I heard hummed rather than sung, but it had a nice beat). But the acquisition of Metromedia by Fox Broadcasting scrambled these plans in the massive company restructuring and the project was lost in the shuffle. The episode "caught in the middle" of this was "Digital Love," which was to have introduced the new score and lyrics to replace the now exhausted first-run composers' contract. Suddenly, without any background for the teasers, the production had to hastily assemble an ad-hoc score "borrowing" the old lyrics. It was badly implemented on this episode before being "refined" later. "Small Wonder"
Written by Howard Leeds & Ron Alexander
Sung by Diane Leslie

She's a small wonder, pretty and bright with soft curls.
She's a small wonder, a girl unlike other girls.
She's a miracle, and I grant you
She'll enchant you with her sight
She's a small wonder, and she'll make your heart beat twice.*
She's fantastic, made of plastic,
Microchips here and there.
She's a small wonder, brings love and laughter everywhere.

*Later changed to "make your heart take flight." (after "Smoker's Delight" for seasons three and four)

Too Good To Be True

Too Good to Be True (The Spin-Off Series) was to have introduced a brand-new teaser and theme song, but it never got beyond series development. A proposed song was drafted by Vanessa advocates in the writers' circle for a story concept. It was runner-up to the final TGTBT proposal, its premise having Vanessa booted from the Lawson residence to wreak havoc over at her "grandparents'" instead. (See Too Good To Be True: The Lost Season). It's likely the final "formal" TGTBT concept would've had a different score and lyrics since that involved Vanessa merging with Vicki into a slightly gentler "nice n' naughty" minx which also would've been her destiny in season five, but this draft would've been just as legitimate had the runner-up concept made production approval. Your imagination must supply the teaser's visuals. (Hint: Imagine montages of Vanessa running wild!)

"Good-Bye Mechminx"
Composed by Kay Beck. 1988.
(Sung to the tune of "Bye-Bye Blackbird")

Demon dear, you're packed up neat, parting's sweet, we are beat,
Good-bye Mechminx,
You were built the perfect girl, cute in curls, skirts a-swirl,
Good-bye Mechminx.
But instead of turning out our darling angel,
We've a terrorist just born to mangle,
Now it's off to Granny's house to bite the dog and torch the mouse,
Bad Seed, Good-bye!
