Trivia:
Did you know that...? Here is
a list of curious facts about the movie and some
interesting details to look for the next time you
watch it!
- The mall
where Marty meets Doc Brown for their
time travel experiment is called
"Twin Pines Mall". Dr. Brown
comments that old farmer Peabody used to
own that land, and he grew pines there.
When Marty goes back in time, he runs
over and knocks down a pine tree on the
Peabody's property. When he comes back to
the mall at the end of the film, it is
called "Lone Pine Mall".
- Eric
Stoltz was originally cast as Marty
McFly, but he didn't act enough like a
teenager so he was changed for Michael J.
Fox. In addition, his costume was
completely recreated.
- The
device in Doc Brown's lab in which Marty
plugs his guitar has a label
"CRM-114", which was the name
of the message decoder on the B-52 in
"Dr. Strangelove", and also the
serial number of the Jupiter explorer in
"2001: A Space Odyssey", both
directed by Stanley Kubrick.
- The
device originally considered to be used
as the time machine was a refrigerator.
Later in an interview, Director Robert
Zemeckis said that the idea was not taken
into account because he and Steven
Spielberg did not want children climbing
into refrigerators and getting trapped
inside.
- The
"Mr. Fusion Home Energy
Converter", which is set up on the
DeLorean when Doc returns from the
future, was made from a Krups coffee
grinder, among other things.
- When
Marty goes back to 1985, he finds a
beggar on a bench. He calls him
"Red". He was "Red
Thomas", the mayor in 1955.
- The
radio in Marty's room plays "Back in
Time", by Huey Lewis and the News,
who wrote and performed some songs for
the film. Also, a poster for their
"Sports" album is visible on
the wall of Marty's bedroom when Doc
calls and wakes him.
- The
"main street" used in this
movie is the same one used in Gremlins.
- The
theatre in 1955 is showing "A Boy's
Life" (the working title for Steven
Spielberg's E.T.), and "Watch the
Skies" (the working title for
Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third
Kind).
- According
to the script, Marty was never supposed
to bang his head on the door of the
DeLorean. This was improvised during
filming when the door mechanism became
faulty.
- The
newscaster on TV in the opening sequence
is 'Deborah Harmon' (qv), who appeared in
director Robert Zemeckis' Used Cars
(1980).

Deleted
Scenes Here are some
deleted scenes (which fans like me hope to see on
a collector's edition DVD) which were cut out
from the final film:
- There is
a part in which Lorraine says that when
she grows up she will let her kids do
anything they want.
- A scene
where Marty decides to peek in a class in
1955 and sees his mother cheating on a
test.
- In 1985
Doc put a suicase into the DeLorean trunk
at the Twin Pines Mall. There was a scene
in which 1955 Doc looks through the
contents of that suitcase, picks up the
hair dryer and asks "What's
this?" "A hair dryer,"
Marty replies. Doc shakes his head and
says, "A hair dryer? Don't they have
towels in the future?" However, the
scene was cut from the final film for
time.
