"A GREAT PERSONALITY"

Tonight's episode really has me a little down. It was a fine episode, I'm not denying that, but it still upset me in a number of moments.

1) When Chris gives Champ back the plastic toy ring from the candy box & he looks around to find her, but can't. (Does this mean that Champ's secret e-mail friend was Chris all along?)

2) When the waitress at the "model" bar asks Mike "It is Mike, right?" ... that just absolutely shone a light where that love interest was headed. The boyfriend part I didn't fully know, but there was no way those two could connect if she couldn't even remember his name. BTW, Mike is by far my fave from the group. He was the Milkman in "Meat Markets", btw. I can't help it. He's a Cub fan, I'm a Cub fan.

3) When Trevor told Claire how someone was going to get hurt in the Yvonne/Randy (was that his name?) relationship, it just started spinning ideas in my mind: Randy couldn't hurt Yvonne, but what could Yvonne possibly do to him? When she told Randy she was ready to become non-chaste ... bells and whistles. What a shame those two broke up, especially considering Yvonne didn't seem too thrilled with Mr. Photo Touch-Up at the end. As a matter of fact, what a shame Chris and Champ seem to have parted.

Like I said, still a fine episode. The topic of romance can't all be smiley faces and hugs. I'm pleased there was a little bit of heartbreak for this series.

Some funny bits:

"Face like Marica Brady ..." for the personal ad. Was it just me or was Yvonne played by Christine Taylor (who played Marcia Brady in The Brady Bunch Movie)?

The trashing of coffee houses & the bogus ordering styles. Considering Cupid now goes up against Frasier (where a very prominent locale is a coffee shop), it had a nice little zip to it.

Where on Olympus did Trevor get his idea for a game show? I mean, why was it even involved in the episode at all (other than a chance to meet with Mr. Doom about the Colony Institute)?

Four storylines in the ep, three of 'em brought to a close and the fourth, Claire's writing, to be continued further, I hope.

Anyhoo, I prattle on & on. Time to see what y'all have to say.

Yours in the frozen tundra of the Midwest,

Steve "I've Dug My Ass Out of 7' Snow Drifts Today" Martin

P.S. I wish the "I want to be admired for my inside qualities" plot line came from someone who wasn't model perfect. I suppose, though, that Yvonne didn't admire Randy's inner qualities ... Nice little twist now that I think on it.

That was my impression. I think she wanted him to commit to a relationship with her. He was unwilling to call her a girlfriend. She was someone to hang out with. I think she tested him to see if he would be tempted. I felt sad for them as a couple. Trevor warned him.

Yeah, I know it's a metaphor / plot device and all, but have the writers actually *bought* a box of Cracker Jack in the last 5 years or so?

Aside from the rare promo with "replicas of the original toys," the Borden Co. has, of late, only been putting in cheap lame little paper tatoos, stickers, Champ would have been lucky enough to find a Scooby Doo/Astro Jetson "flicker card" from Cartoon Network to tell Chris "Ri Ruv Roo."

I think there was a little bit of a red herring in last night's (Thursday's) episode. When Yvonne was sitting at the bar with Trevor, composing her personal ad, and Claire's friend jumped in with a rhyming haiku, I thought for sure I detected her match -- he seemed as if he were possibly blind, the way he was looking around, and I thought "Aha! How perfect. Who else would not be distracted by her looks?"

But then after one other scene with him and Claire, the character just disappeared from the episode. And there was never really a complete resolution of the match between Yvonne and Ken, since the viewer is left with the impression that she wasn't so happy about going back to Mr. Good-Looking after all. Maybe that was the point ...

Another good episode, but it felt really odd to watch it on a Thursday. Now what am I going to do on Saturday nights home alone, when the boyfriend is on call? Blockbuster, here I come.

///That woman, Evon, the one who wanted to be noticed for her personality. in tonights episode was so shallow. She went back to her old boyfriend! She would have been better with Ken.///

Yes, between that and the Champ/Chris situation, last night's episode left me feeling unfulfilled. It was probably my least fave of all the episodes so far, though I will never think of 'The Smithsonian' the same way again (g).

Come to think of it, with even Mike not hooking up with that waitress, the episode just had this overall 'Love Sucks' attitude. In other episodes, when a character/s propel this idea into the story, either Trevor or Claire insert a shining beacon of hope or romanticism that offsets the negativity. I didn't get that this time around.

///As to Dr. Allen's pursuit of Trevor's past, well how many of you think that Trevor is Preston Milke? It seems oh so coincidental. Who knows? But I would hope not. I believe that Trevor is Cupid.///

Well, Claire said it herself, with the way Trevor eats, the fact that he hasn't had a massive coronary and he hasn't gained ten inches in the waist over the season thus far would support he's not mortal. And Preston Milke did gain that ten inches. Also, because of the distinctive nature of a VW Beetle, I think a decent percentage of any group asked that 'if you were a car, what car would you be?' question would give that as an answer. I know I would.

The other thing I was thinking about was how Trevor said he's gotten credit for 7 matches in the past 5 months. Can anyone list who they think they are? I can remember them all off the top of my head, and I missed one episode(the one that had Sherilyn Fenn). I can think of:

1) The couple in the pilot
2) the linguist & the chef-wannabe
3) the married couple from 'He's in Heaven'
4) Lisa Loeb's character and her first love's younger bro
5) Cynthia and the cosmologist from 'End of an Eros'

That's all I can think of, unless Claire and Alex actually count as a match from 'The Meat Market'. I wasn't giving credit for the 'Hung Jury' episode since Claire actually got the couple together while Trevor was wasting time on the musician. I don't remember 'Truly Fractured Fairy Tales' or 'The Heart of the Matter' (Am I remembering that one right?) having matches that worked out.

Yes, she did, and I laughed when I heard that. What was just as funny was a few minutes earlier when Yvonne was talking about her "test" and told the guy she was going to shave her head. Christine Taylor played Ross' girlfriend on Friends who shaved her head. I love all those little inside jokes!
