Storm

Recently I watched a theatre work entitled " Storm ". It was a work adapted from one of Cao Yu's work know as << Lei Yu >> otherwise known as Thunderstorm. Toy Factory Theatre Ensemble decide to adapted this story and brought it on stage. The show was staged at Raffles Hotel ( Jubilee Hall ) from 11-19 December 1998 in Singapore. Toy Factory has adpated the script to a local setting with changes in designs, plot lines as well as inclusion of some characters while retaining the spirit found in the orginal writing. The show was named " Storm ".

So what's is the story about? Are you interested??? If you are, read on.....





Thirty years ago, she had a scandalous affair as a servant girl with Zhou family's Zhou Puyuan ( played by Tony Kim), in Penang. The affair resulted in heartbreak, hatred as well as two sons. The first, Zhou Ping ( played by Wallace Ang), grows up in the wealthy Zhou household but is living in remose because of his incestuous relationship with his step-mother Zhou Fanyi ( played by Sharon Au). The second , Lu Dahai ( played by Jeffery Low), grows up being the unknown illict child of Zhou PuYuan and is currently organising a workers' strike against Puyuan's tin mining company in which he was working in.

Shiping's daughter with Lu Gui ( played by Ching Hon Chong ong), is working in PuYuan's mansion as a servant though the introduction of her father, who also happens to be the house butler......

Upon knowing her family's connnection to the Zhous, Shiping intends to uproot her family to Malacca especially her daughter Sifeng, who is now the object of affection of Ping as well as Zhou Chong ( played by James Seow), Fanyi's natural son.

Ping and Sifeng finally decided to elope on a stormy night but is stopped by Fanyi and Chong. Soon PuYuan and Shiping come to the sence and the sins of these two household are finally revealed.

It turned out that Ping and Sifeng are siblings. As Sifeng is already pregnant with Ping's child, upon hearing the truth she ran out of the house with Zhou Chong following behind. As it was a stormy night, Sifeng and Zhou Chong was strike by the thunder and both of them died. Lu DaiHai handed a gun to Zhou Ping and Zhou Ping shoot himself to death.

After watching the show, I was both touched and sad by the ending. It was an interesting show. Those who have missed it, pray that it will be restaged again soon. Remember to watch it if it restaged again. Don't miss it for the second time.
