Chapter Two

One month earlier….

"The Morning After"

Gillian rolled over and bravely opened one eye. The light hit her hard, and she immediately closed both eyes as tightly as she could squeeze them. Her head felt like it has been hit with a hammer. She absently reached up to check for lumps. She didn’t find any.

She lay perfectly still and tried to figure out where the pain was coming from. She didn’t remember hitting her head. She couldn’t even remember how she had gotten into bed.

Gillian opened her eyes again and tried to adjust them to the harsh light that was flooding her room. She spotted the sari she had worn to the SOS on a chair.

“Ryan,” Gillian muttered to herself. She had gone to the opening of SOS. Ryan and she had danced. Then he had taken her outside and they had shared that wonderful kiss.

Gillian gently ran her finger over her lips. If she tried hard enough, she could feel the taste of Ryan’s mouth on hers. She missed him so much. It wasn’t fair that they were getting a divorce.

The divorce. Gillian groaned loudly as things started coming back to her. She had told Ryan that she wanted a divorce. Then she had proceeded to get drunk to try and numb the pain.

Gillian felt the tears brimming up in her eyes. She didn’t want to divorce Ryan. She loved him more than anything in the world. He loved her too. Gillian didn’t doubt that for a minute. But he insisted that they couldn’t be together. It just wasn’t meant to be.

She quickly brushed the tears away before they had a chance to fall. She couldn’t spend the morning wallowing in the misery of what couldn’t be helped. She had to get to work. Hopefully, that would take her mind off of Ryan.

“Gillian. Gillian, do you hear me? Gillian!”

“What?” Gillian looked up to find David Hayward standing over her. She had taken a seat in the hospital sunroom to try and get her thoughts together. She had only been on duty for an hour, but she couldn’t focus on anything.

David frowned impatiently. “Gillian, I asked you if you had gotten the x-rays for me yet.”

“What x-rays?” Gillian demanded. David was the last person she wanted to deal with. Just looking at him reminded her of all the horrible things that she and Ryan had suffered through.

“Gillian, Dr. Brock told me that he asked you to pick up the x-rays for his patient and bring them to me so I could do a consult. Did you get them?” David asked.

Gillian vaguely remembered the conversation with Dr. Brock. “I haven’t had a chance,” she muttered.

David smiled smugly at her. “Princess, is something wrong?” His smooth voice was dripping with sarcasm.

Gillian stood up and glared at him. “Go to hell,” she hissed.

David laughed as he watched her leave the sunroom. “I guess I’ll get them myself.”

Gillian hurried down the hospital corridor and ordered herself to calm down. She knew she couldn’t let David get to her. It gave him some kind of sadistic pleasure, and she couldn’t deal with that. She spotted Jake heading into a room down the hall. Jake would understand. He was always there for her when she needed him.

Gillian started to go into the room and then stopped. Jake was standing there cradling little Colby in his arms. He looked so happy staring down at his little girl. Gillian’s mind drifted to the conversation she and Ryan had had about having children. They had planned on waiting for a few years. Now, they would never have kids. They didn’t have a future together.

The lump was rising in her throat again, but Gillian ignored it. She refused to let herself cry. She turned to head for radiology and nearly collided with Trevor.

“Mr. Dillion! I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention,” Gillian said.

“That’s okay. You’re the person I was looking for,” Trevor replied.

“I am?” Gillian said in surprise.

Trevor nodded and pulled out a stack of papers from his briefcase. “I had these drawn up for you this morning,” he said.

Gillian frowned. “What are they?” she asked.

“Your divorce papers,” Trevor replied.
