Xander decided today was a good day to visit Jesse. He hadn't been there since last time he came back and that was awhile ago. So, after lunch and some shopping, Willow went with him to the Sunnydale Cemetery. The familiar resting place seemed to almost welcome them. The sky was becoming dark and gray clouds blanketed the sky. When they arrived at Jesse's tombstone, Willow brushed away the old flowers and put a fresh bouquet on the grass. She walked to the stone bench off to the side to give him some privacy. She smiled when she remembered nine years ago when he had sat at the same bench, listening to her talk to Jesse. She sat down on the cool surface and hummed to herself as she waited.
Xander ran his hands through his short dark brown hair and sat
down on the
grass. He had so much to say to Jesse, and he didn't know how
to start.
"Hey, Jess. Remember me? Your bud, Xander? Yup, it's me. I'm here with Willow. Geez. I haven't been back here in so long. Sorry about that. I guess Willow already told you that Buffy's getting married and stuff. Time has flown by so fast, huh? At first, it was just you, me, and Will. Then Buffy came along. You...um,...died.... We became the Slayerettes, and then I move. Now, nine years later, I'm work for the FBI. Me, Xander Harris. Strange, huh? Willow has changed so much, don't you think?"
He went on to tell him about Washington and life in general. He finally stopped and just sat there, listening to the wind howl and the trees rustle.
"Hey, Xander? We gotta go. The rehearsal starts in half an hour and it looks like it's about to rain."
"Yeah, I'm ready. Let's go."
Xander stood up and bid good-bye to his friend. Willow smiled sadly and promised Jesse that she would come by before the end of the week.
"Wait, Xander. You've got grass and other stuff stuck to you. You don't wanna show up to the rehearsal looking like you were rolling in the grass."
He turned around and walked back to her. She brushed him off and fixed his collar and tie. She looked at up him, and he smiled. His eyes locked with hers and he suddenly felt a little dizzy. His heart skipped a beat and his stomach felt a little strange. He closed his eyes and grabbed onto to her to steady himself.
"Xander? Are you okay? You're not catching a cold, are you? Cause I don't think Buffy and Angel would want one of their best men sick in bed."
He opened his eyes and smiled weakly at her. He slowly moved his hands away from her shoulders when he was sure he was okay.
"I'm fine! Nothing to worry about. It was probably lunch or something. Come on, let's go."
Willow didn't believe his excuse, but she didn't press the issue. She followed him out of the cemetery, wondering what had happened back there. When Xander's eyes had looked into hers for that brief second, she had felt her knees go weak and her heart flutter. Then when Xander had grabbed onto her, she had felt a surge of electricity run through her. What was going on?
As she pondered more, the rain suddenly began to come down in. Instead of running, Xander stopped and just stood there.
"Xander! What are you doing?! It's gonna start to really pour!"
"Oh well! Let's walk in the rain! It'll be fun! I haven't done it in years. Remember when we were little and we would run out and play in the rain? Today's a good time as any!"
Willow laughed and nodded. The two friends walked hand in hand in the rain, enjoying each other's company.
Xander smiled. So, this is what people meant when they said, "Enjoy
life." Well, he was going to enjoy it by walking in the rain with
his best friend.
