When american lawyer, Dr Norbert, is sent some photos showing him drunk in the arms of a girl, he hires McGill to find out who took them and why. Blackmail seems unlikely as he has received no demands. As McGill investigates, he finds himself getting offers and threats from various

Marcelle, a blind French girl witnesses the murder of her mother. Afterwards, it appears that her mother's jewels were stolen by the killer. McGill answers Marcelle’s advert, offering a reward for the recovery of the jewels. The French police and Marcelle’s uncle both advise McGill to drop the case. This only makes him more determined to find out the truth.

When Dalby, an oceanographer disappears with important research papers about commercial sea farming, McGill is hired by his boss to try and find him, and persuade him to return to his job. After flying to the Greek Islands, McGill tracks him down and offers to buy the research papers back, but finds he has stiff competition from an Albanian agent.

CIA man John Gilsen, after uncovering a massive drugs syndicate, goes into hiding to protect himself. The syndicate set a trap for him in his home village, knowing he will return there. They also hire McGill under false pretences to find him. When he starts to ask questions in the village, McGill finds the locals unfriendly. Only later does he find out who he is working for, but time is running out for John Gilsen.
