Bruno Martelli, the school's talented pianist and songwriter. The voice of reason and sanity, with more good lines per episode than any other character except for Mrs Berg.
A quiet and sensitive soul, Bruno is loyal to his friends and family, and tries hard to do the right thing by everyone. He is the one who most people go to with their problems. Doris in particular has cried on his shoulder on numerous occasions. He also was one of the first people to befriend Troy Phillips, who called him his best friend.
Bruno's father Angelo was a taxi driver, who did everything possible to support his son, refusing to let him work to help pay for his music. He only wanted the best for Bruno. Once the two had a huge fight over going to Julliard - Angelo wanted his son to go, Bruno preferred to stay at the School of the Arts. We never saw Bruno's mother, but we know that she too was a talented pianist whose favourite piece was the Moonlight Sonata. A man who worked too hard and worried too much, Angelo Martelli died at the start of season 3, and Bruno had to leave school. He got a job at Caruso's coffeehouse, with the help of Mr Shorofsky, and worked his way up to head waiter.
Shy by nature, Bruno suffered from stage fright at one time, and was also afraid of showing his music to others. This shyness didn't stop him from having his fair share of romances though! He was in love with dancer Kathy Murphy, writing "Be My Music" for her, and helped her when the school discovered that she had multiple sclerosis. He and the other kids helped to stage her audition for an exclusive dance troupe, and she was accepted and left the school. In the episode Relationships Bruno became involved with Nancy, an older woman who worked at the country and western bar they went to. It looked for a time as if he was going to get together with best friend Doris Schwartz (And the Winner Is....) but just after they had their first kiss, Mr Reardon walked in and the moment was lost (amid howls of protest from some fans.) He caused a stir after he left the school when he fell in love with Lisa Connors, a beautiful music teacher who frequented Caruso's. Unfortunately, she happened to be Shorofsky's student teacher, who was teaching many of his friends. She ended the relationship, although both wished it could have ended differently.
Bruno was never seen again after the end of season 3, and his future absence was never explained. He did however return for the final episode, Baby Remember My Name
