Ian Ware started at the School of the Arts in season 6. His first scene was in the office with Mrs Berg, involving the dotty secretary not understanding his accent and thinking that he was saying "where" rather than his surname, "Ware"
Born and bred in London, Ian's Cockney accent was a source of many jokes amongst the kids.
In many ways, Ian was a kind of updated Bruno Martelli, but much less inhibited. Like Bruno, he was extremely musically talented, (mainly with the guitar and keyboards) and a good songwriter. Also like Bruno, he had a love-hate relationship with Mr Shorofsky.
When Ian started at the school, Shorofsky wasn't long in discovering that he couldn't read music, and instead had a phenomenal ability to play by ear. Needless to say, Shorofsky eventually succeeded in making him learn.
We never learned much about Ian's family, but we did see his father in the episode Pros and Cons. The two men had a tempestuous relationship, and didn't get along at all, but they ended up making up, and performing a Cockney style song at Lous. (Men About Town)
Ian's old band before he left London was called The Driven, and included his old girlfriend Joanna. He was thrown into turmoil in Ian's Girl when the band showed up to play some gigs in New York. It was a time when Ian was homesick and in the middle of yet another fight with Shorofsky, and he nearly left the school to travel with them. Some thoughts by Reggie helped him to decide to stay, as did the realisation that he had changed during his time at the school. Joanna noticed that too. When he played the song "After Dark" for her, she commented that it was more mature and sophisticated, and that he was growing as a musician.
One of Ian's closest friends at the school was Reggie Higgins, and the scriptwriters never seemed to know what to do with them - were they going out or weren't they? Ian was one of Reggie's stuanchest supporters in A Different Drummer where she nearly got kicked out of school. In All Talking, All Singing, All Dancing they wrote a song together, It's Love I'm After After All which was soppy in the extreme, and Reggie even kissed him when it got put into the show, but they never officially got together. Still, Reggie looked more than a little jealous when Joanna showed up, and when she tried to get closer to the stage during the Driven concert, and some guy began hitting on her, Ian jumped off the stage and head-butted him. Then there was the episode Stradi-Various where Reggie was fed up of Ian taking her for granted - after 8 months of going to the movies together, he'd never picked her up at home, and was really casual towards her. Ian took her criticism to heart and began acting really romantic towards her, but went a little overboard, making Reggie avoid him totally! They seemed to be going out together then, but who really knows for sure?
Ian worked on the school radio station, both as a DJ and as Nicole Chapman's producer. Although they didn't always agree on the choice of music she played - he walked out on her once when she played one too many Frannie Fortune records.
