It was in Czech-Mate that we realised that Nicole wasn't exactly shy about her attributes - she was even voted most likely to succeed in her kindergarten class! She came across as self-confident and independent, not one to let Jesse Velasquez walk all over her, a facet of their relationship which was to be repeated over and over again! This same self-confidence emerged in Spontaneous Combustion when she had run-ins with Danny and Doris to name but two, over her refusal to take part in any of the moves to get the ban on dancing and singing in the halls overturned, and to get Leroy reinstated. By the end of the episode though, she had realised how important the issue was to the School, and supported the kids. When Morloch asked her a question, her reply was "Ask Leroy Johnson."
Danny and Chris hit on her when she first came to the School, and both were later revealed to have crushes on her, Danny in Danny de Bergerac and Chris in the slightly silly His Majesty Donlon but the love of her life was Jesse Velasquez. After several false starts and rocky moments, including getting locked in a music room together (Blizzard) they finally started dating, and against all odds, were very happy together. The two complemented each other, Nicole helping Jesse to concentrate on his work, and Jesse helping Nicole to lighten up. This came in especially handy during Parent's Week when pressure from her parents to do well in the science fair and from the other kids to do well in the musical were weighing heavily on Nicole.
Nicole's parents weren't fond of Jesse, and this lead to a couple of run-ins, most notably in Danny de Bergerac when Danny pretended to be Nicole's obnoxious boyfriend to make Jesse look good. It also threatened to ruin their relationship in Dreams when Nicole wanted to marry Jesse to save him from being deported. Her parents refused, and she was bridesmaid at his wedding to Doris Schwartz. When this marriage was annulled, it was Nicole who found the clause which kept Jesse in the country - extraordinary talent.
In spite of all the obstacles put in their path - Jesse getting jealous over Ray Claxton, Jesse feeling as if Nicole was "suffocating" him, Nicole leaving the school for a time, Jesse kissing Kate, differences over whether to have sex or not - the relationship between Nicole and Jesse flourished over the years, until season 6 of the show. In the episode The Last Dance Nicole broke up with Jesse, because she didn't think she loved him enough. The two continued to be good friends.
Nicole is adopted. Her real mother was a photographer, Diane Petit, who got pregnant at 15. (Who Am I, Really?) When Diane showed up, Nicole's parents were worried about losing her, and for a time she was forbidden to see Diane. Nicole's mother convinced her to leave town, but when Jesse played Nicole's taped journal, they realised their fears were unfounded. Nicole ended up spending the summer with Diane at an arts festival in New Mexico. Nicole was adopted because her parents always wanted a daughter. They had two sons before they adopted her, called Denny and Joe.
Nicole got along well with all the other students. Her best friends were Holly Laird until she left the school, and Reggie Higgins. When Kate Reilly first started at the school, herself and Nicole got off on the wrong foot due to Kate's interest in Jesse, but they ended up being good friends.
Another of Nicole's good friends was Leroy Johnson. It was as her teacher that a friendship was really developed on screen between them. It was Leroy who came backstage to talk to Nicole after her debut on Broadway, and him she talked to right before she re-auditioned for the school. (Choices) It was Leroy whose shoulder she cried on when Jesse got involved in a gang, and when Leroy needed help with his biology course (All I Want For Christmas) Nicole was his tutor.
Nicole worked as a DJ on the school radio station, with Ian Ware as her producer. They didn't always agree on the choice of music though, he even walked out on her when she played one too many Frannie Fortune records!
Frannie Fortune was one of Nicole's favourite singers, and she was thrilled to get a chance to work with her idol in Fame and Fortune. However, things didn't work out between the two of them, and Nicole ended up instead of singing backup, almost cutting the demo herself. She was dumped when Frannie decided to clean up her act. She was still a fan of Frannie even after that, and she learned a lot from the experience.
Nicole Chapman was killed in a car accident, when a car driven by Mikey Garth crashed and hit a telegraph post. Both Mikey and Danny Amatullo escaped with minor physical injuries, but sitting in the middle, Nicole was killed instantly. (Go Softly Into Morning) Her death hit students and faculty alike very hard.
