| A Cruel Lover basically
is the story of a news reporter (Kong Wa) whose father left his family
to marry a rich woman when he was still a kid. Since then, KW, his mom
and his grandma had been living a tough life. One day his grandma died
after having a big argument with that rich woman, then KW decided to take
revenge on them, no matter what he had to do. So, he tried to make the
daughter (played by Meng Yee-man) of his boss (who is one of the tenth
wealthiest people in Asia) fall in love with him and later marry him so
he would get the power and money he needed for revenge. But at that time,
he already had a girl friend (played by Ng Suet-man) and they were very
much in love. Therefore he had to choose between love and revenge. There
are three love lines around KW's character, besides Meng and Ng, there's
another news reporter (played by Au Shuk-ching) who's so irrationally in
love with him that she's even willing to die for him. KW finally took his
revenge by sacrificing these 3 women in different ways. Although he seemed
to love them all (even at the same time), somehow he still had to betray
them. I love this kind of characterization. It's so true that things in
real life are not always simply right or wrong, sometimes they do fall
on a grey area.
KW's acting is impressive. He's so good at playing complex character with lots of depths and layers that you can easily see and feel the mixed emotions in his eyes, and that's how amazing an actor he is. And he looked very chic especially in the later half of the series wearing those fancy suits (some are long flare cut blazers tapered at the waist, shirts with ruffles in front and French cuffs etc.) which gave him a very romantic and handsome (as always) look. Finally, all I must say is that,
no KW fan should miss this series. This is the only TV series I have seen
so far (ATV + TVB) which would concentrate so much on just one character
or actor. I think KW has at least occupied 75% of the screen time
and he is the axis of the whole story. If you haven't seen it yet, go and
find the video rentals. I'm sure that you'll love it as much as I do.
